Farmers’ Voice Radio has arrived in Sri Lanka! The first episode of තේ යාය - Thé Yaya (meaning ‘Tea Garden’ in Sinhala), a radio programme made by and for smallholder tea farmers in the south of the country, was broadcast on Rangiri Sri Lanka Radio last Saturday at 5pm local time.

The initiative is a collaboration between @twiningsuk Sourced With Care programme, Sri Lankan NGO Chrysalis @chrysalisgtesl , @prathibamedia - PMN and six of Twinings’ tea supplier factories in the region. The Tea Research Institute of Sri Lanka and the Tea Small Holdings Development Authority are also involved as technical advisers to the small group of tea farmers who have been selected to share their knowledge and experience on good agricultural practice, climate change adaptation, entrepreneurship and women’s empowerment in the 30-minute weekly programme.

Mrs Renuka, tea farmer and member of the group that will meet monthly to record content for the radio programme, said:
“I never thought I will have this kind of opportunity. I have a small tea field, and it gave me the life and achieved my goals as a woman. The economic downturn in last few years hit hard on our lives. As women we have faced social challenges. We should address them too. I have a daughter and son. I raised them with the income of tea. We have very limited channels and resources to follow to gain knowledge. I hope we can take collective initiatives which benefit all of us smallholders.”

The programme will air every Saturday and Monday at 5pm local time over the coming 12 months reaching thousands of smallholder tea farmers.

"A woman plays a very valuable role in society today. Most often people think of #women as slaves to meet the demands of men. But with time⏳women have attained a special place in society. We’ve also seen and heard of instances where women in certain cultures have not been given the place they deserve. Being an #intelligent woman is an asset in this day and age. It isn’t enough to only discuss topics like the rights of women, their #freedom, importance and #value on #InternationalWomensDay ✅ A woman always stands on her feet with her sheer will and contributes immensely to the progression of society. So, I believe that women need to be given their rightful place and make their voices heard 📢.”

D. M. Sanduni Nimesha, a regional journalist 📖🖋️, expressed the above thoughts in a session at the “Sabaa Handa” Media Training Workshop organized by Prathiba Media Network - PMN. This was a special training workshop conducted with the support of the @undp and the European Union, in order to strengthen the Reconciliation Process in #SriLanka and create awareness on Violence against Media.
