Took a tour of the Fibershed Work Center earlier this semester with another cohort of CCA cross discipline students, co-instructor Amy Campos and founder Rebecca Burgess. This is one of three field trips in our Upper Division Interdisciplinary Studio class, Local Fiber Incubator / Local Regenerative Economies, which is supported by a curriculum grant from PALS. What an inspiring day, grounded in the soil and hyper local watershed. Students really feel when the work is neither marketing nor idealism but just IS ….. it just makes common sense. We learned about indigenous plants which provide material for making objects while also mitigating the potential of flooding, and the need for building mid-scale infrastructure to counter large extractive-based industrial systems.. and so much more. Fibershed is a living example of ‘ways other’ than boundless extraction; a hopeful ‘eddy out’ from the main stream rapids. Many thanks to Rebecca for her vision, commitment, persistence and wisdom…. All of which will continue to inspire our students for years to come. Now onto making within local fiber constrains… always a means for innovation. Many thanks too to our support faculty Victoria Wagner and her team to make this beyond the classroom learning possible. @fibershed @ccadesigndivision @ccafashiondesign @aca_amycampos

Part 2: Over the summer I challenged myself to photograph as many artists in their studios as possible. It was important to me to make each portrait as authentic to the artist as possible, trying to translate the colors, themes, materials, and space in each artists’ work to the photographic composition. I photographed twenty artists. Two favorites each from the final ten pictured here. Artists all tagged in the photos. I'm available for future portrait work.

LO SMITH Ya, I Miss You Too Ceramic, glaze, and wool 3D print, and vinyl pouch 10 x 24 inches Artist Book: “Notes on Blue: Observing Indigo” Paper (second and third image) Lo Smith Born and raised in Cleveland Ohio, Lo Smith is a multi-disciplinary performance artist, printmaker, and curator who is both unapologetically Black and aggressively midwestern.Their work engages with reproductive justice, revisionist history, and Black joy. Through prints on paper and textiles, they explore histories of medical experimentation on Black bodies, untold stories of Black American life, and their own queer positionality and future. They are also interested in the racial democratic possibility of print. Their work has been shown at SPACES, Rubelle and Norman Schafler Gallery, The Brooklyn Fine Art Print Fair, The Cleveland Institute for Art, and The Morgan Conservatory, and Riffe Gallery. Their curatorial work has been presented at / published by New York University, Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Sculpture Center in Cleveland. I often say my practice mimics two types of animals; crows and dolphins. In my crow phase, I'm collecting shiny bits of research that interest me and making a horde. Artist Statement: I'm experimenting with materials and the cultural contexts that are assigned to them. Notes on Blue (2025) is the product of this research completed during my Indigo Research Fellow with the Pratt Dye Garden X Tatter Library in the summer of 2025. Initially serving as a container for my experiments dying paper with indigo, it became a mediation on how humans try to mimic nature in extractive ways, as well as the social political history of indigo. Ya, I Miss You Too(2025) is a product of my dolphin phase, where I'm rolling around in a novel technique or process, then breaching the surface to make something necessary. I made a polyjet printed avatar of myself, which I call my 'son', to attend events with family and loved ones who aren't immediately accessible by structural or casual inconvenience.
