👀 PREVIEW: A new entrance. A new chapter for North Shields.

Here’s your first look at the new entrance to Common Ground, with branding by Prefab77, aka Peter Manning—North Shields born and bred.

Behind those doors, the former Wilko at the Beacon Centre is taking shape. We now have 30 traders joining us, and we’re growing by the day! Traders are starting to set up their units, bringing plenty of interesting things with them.

Think fresh bread, an outfit with a past, antiques, vintage finds, local art and useful everyday items. Things made locally, things worth keeping and things you didn’t know you were looking for.

But shopping is only part of it. We’re making room for a warm welcome, a coffee and a chat with someone you know—or someone you’ve just met. Somewhere to stop for a while and feel part of the town.

There’ll be space for workshops, events and much more, with local art on the walls and a big community noticeboard to help people find out what’s happening and get involved.

All of this is made possible by the Gill family, owners of the Beacon Centre, who have been serving the community for three generations. Their investment is giving independent businesses room to grow and bringing this space back into use for North Shields. @beaconcentre

Common Ground will be dog-friendly and open Wednesday to Sunday. Interested in joining us? Standard units cost £100 per week plus VAT, with a minimum licence term of three months. Contact hello@ilovenorthshields.com to find out more, arrange a viewing or request an application form.

We can’t wait to welcome you in. ❤️

COMMON GROUND. THE REVEAL. ⚡

New name. New identity. A new chapter for North Shields.

We're excited to reveal the official branding for COMMON GROUND, created by North Shields artist Peter Manning aka Prefab77.

And the name says it all.

North Shields was built on trade, movement and people coming together. A working port town where fishermen, merchants, travellers and traders have crossed paths for generations.

Different people. Different stories. Shared ground.

That's the idea behind Common Ground.

A new meeting place in the heart of North Shields. Somewhere to discover independent businesses, exchange ideas, make connections and be part of something.

A town built on trade. A place built around people.

Peter has given Common Ground an identity of its own, rooted in the spirit of North Shields while looking firmly towards its future.

And he's not finished yet.

👀 WATCH THIS SPACE. Especially the entrance to the former Wilko, where Peter is working on a transformation that will give Common Ground a whole new presence in the town centre.

From an old high street store to a new home for independent trading.

DIFFERENT PEOPLE. SHARED AMBITION.

WE MEET ON COMMON GROUND. ❤️

❤️ I LOVE NORTH SHIELDS. IT'S THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT.

This little video captures something I believe in wholeheartedly. A community coming together, working from within, sharing ideas.

I'm incredibly proud to be working independently with the Gill family, owners of the Beacon Centre, on bringing Common Ground to life.

The Gill family's roots in North Shields go back three generations, beginning with selling fish on the Fish Quay. Now they're investing in the town's future by transforming the former Wilko into a new indoor market, creating opportunities for the next generation of independent traders.

And that's what makes Common Ground so exciting.

There's a gap between trading at occasional markets and taking on a traditional high street shop. For many talented independent businesses, the costs and commitments of their own premises are simply too great.

Common Ground aims to bridge that gap. An affordable stepping stone where independent traders can establish themselves, build a customer base, grow sustainably and become part of a supportive community, without the overheads of a traditional shop.

Our friend Peter Manning @prefab77_ has created the branding for Common Ground, and lovely friend Rachel has produced this little teaser, capturing why North Shields means so much to so many of us. @northernstoryboard

More updates coming your way!

We'll be sharing the Common Ground journey through I Love North Shields too, introducing the people and businesses who are all setting up their independent businesses in North Shields.

These are the people who believe in our town, invest in its future and want others to succeed alongside them.

I'm so excited about what we're building together.

Exciting times ahead and super proud to be part of this!

Simmie x
