📽️🎞️ An interdisciplinary artist whose work celebrates autobiographical stories of community, Barbara Malaran was a key member of Kilawin Kolektibo, a vibrant Pinay lesbian collective active in 90s NYC, capturing the heartbeat of the group's marches, protests, and celebrations firsthand.

Their passion led them to co-found Lesbian Central, the world's first Lesbian TV talk show, a GLAAD-sponsored platform empowering queer-identified women artists to tell their own stories. Barbara went on to earn dual degrees in Communications and Media Studies from The New School, studying under mentors like Cecilia Dougherty and Barbara Hammer, and their work has been supported by NYSCA, the Barbara Hammer Experimental Filmmaker Grant, and the Prism Foundation. They currently live near Portland, OR, on the traditional unceded homelands of the Atfalati-Kalapuya (Tualatin Band of Kalapuyans), continuing their dedication to innovative storytelling.

As we celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, I hope you’ll join me in investing in the AANHPI LGBTQ community.

Prism Foundation, a fully volunteer-run 501(c)(3), empowers the AANHPI LGBTQ community through scholarships and grants for students and organizations. Since Prism’s founding, we have mobilized over $550,000 in grants and scholarships, helping 110 students pursue their dreams and empowering 128 organizations to build stronger communities.

This month, Prism is participating in Give In May, a month-long campaign supporting AANHPI nonprofits with additional cash prizes for organizations that raise the most funds or engage the highest number of donors. I’m proud to share we’ve earned prize funding every year we’ve participated.

One donation of $10 could help us secure thousands of dollars in cash prizes. If you’re willing and able, I’d be grateful for your help in sustaining Prism’s work: https://mtyc.co/sgyblf (link in bio)
