POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The @litlivefest 2026 is turning out to be so much fun and everyone is having an amazing time, listening to eminent speakers, authors, artists, film makers, poets, storytellers and actors...

This year @strayingaround and I @pendharkaranand led a Discussion for kids around 'Living with Creatures' (wild and domestic)...

Several visiting students, from as far as Lonavala enjoyed looking at my book, The Coastal Life of Mumbai and were especially fascinated by the immense biodiversity and the large Map, showing all the forts, lighthouses, caves and other monuments of the city, prominently marked on the city map...

Personally, it was a high for me to meet various writers I have followed and am a big fan of, viz. Gulzar, Dr. Ramchandra Guha, Dr. Sashi Tharoor, Allan Sealy, Javed Akhtar, Jerry Pinto, and many more...

The diversity of topics covered is absolutely mind-blowing, from emergent readers'/children's literature as part of the Little Festival to culture, contemporary urban and gender issues, politics, technology, ecology and developmental dilemmas...

Today is the last day and I am looking forward to the amazing line up of speakers and performers...

I hope you are coming?

From Dollars to Sand Dollars to these shiny coins…. Annual Honesty seed pods were not the only money reference we discovered in US.
While we were waiting still in a corner, watching a Stellar’s Jay diligently fly in and out of its nest among the trees and bushes, these incredible seed pods caught our eye. At the time, we had no idea what plant they belonged to, but we couldn’t stop admiring their papery, translucent beauty.
After a little post-hike research, we discovered they are seed pods of Lunaria annua, also known as “Annual Honesty (or the Money Plant)”…. Well if you cannot manage to be honest daily, at least aim for annually, right?
Maybe it is called honest because the translucent walls of the pods are so clear you can see the seeds perfectly hidden inside… leaving nothing to hide!
The plant is native to Europe and parts of Asia, and it was brought to North America by early settlers. Historically, it has been associated with honesty, sincerity, and prosperity due to its coin-like appearance.
It is a different kind of pleasure to observe plants at different stages of their growth… sometimes completely unidentifiable from the previous stage…. Fortunately we got to see many such instances including this one… Mother Nature thank you for keeping us engaged and surprised all the time.

Mosquito breeding ground at Sahar Road Metro Station (Gate Number A1). Water has logged across a massive under-construction area. The presence of dragonflies in the vicinity clearly indicates a heavy concentration of mosquito larvae.

Date: 14.09.2026

P.S. : Complaint filed with @my_bmc

Hoping this will be resolved quickly, proper action will be taken, and accountability will be fixed.

I went to check on some caterpillars in my colony garden…before my eyes could hit them they were already enchanted by this absolute beauty… my hazy phone pictures cannot do justice to the beauty she was… you have to meet them in person.. so keep you eyes and senses open to be flabbergasted on your regular mundane day… Had observed its caterpillars yesterday (spotted by son Prakhar Palash)… So am a bit sure it is a moth called Orvasca subnotata. Please correct me if am wrong. Wiki says “Orvasca subnotata is a nygmiine tussock moth in the family Erebidae, found in Indomalaya and East Asia, where it is known as a pest that feeds on millets. ”

All the humans who judge a hairy leg or hands or body…please try doing it with this fairy like creature…

Woke up to a sparkling day with snow clinging onto the high peaks, valleys & ridges opposite my room.

While the world struggles with its own ebbs & flows, being controlled by politicians, oligarchs & big businesses, I'm trying to control my heart, which has its own thinking about how I should live, what I should do & what I shouldn't...

It's funny, especially since I've been pinned & identify as a head (brain) person, relying on commands arising therein. And here Im a victim of my heart, which ordered my brain to quit the fantastic Expedition that I had joined, as a photographer & documentation associate.

This is the very same heart, which drove me to the remotest parts of the world, into tribal lands, villages, government schools, turned a scientist, teacher, educator into a raging activist. Following this very heart led me into an uncharted career as a wildlife biologist, urban Ecologist, an author, explorer, mentor, motivational speaker & a crazy lover of mountains, reefs, beaches, forests, grasslands, deserts, plateaus & every possible landscape on this planet...

It made me an Earth Lover, a true global citizen. From a sickly frail 11yr old who was barely 18 kgs, this heart pushed me to conquer multiple marathons, do wildlife surveys in harsh high altitude areas such as Nandadevi Biosphere Reserve, South Siachen Region (DBO & Debsang Plains), it made a Sahyadri trekker into an ardent mountaineer, who dropped even senior positions or plum, financially lucrative projects to rush away for Expeditions, like I did this time too...

And then this very heart decided to not let me sleep for days once I was in my favourite landscape. It decided to pump erratically & raise my blood pressure to unsafe levels, needing me to descend to lower elevations & quit the expedition for which I had given up so much... What is this heart protecting me from? What does it know & understand that my superlative brain is not processing? Or is it my subconscious mind which is commanding my heart to act like this?

Whatever the order of hierarchy between them, I've realised one thing that we shouldn't ignore any part of ur body, a tooth, an appendix, a liver, kidney, stomach or eye!

It's important to keep one's morale high and spirits roaring and soaring, even if you are feeling low and down..

So what's better than a Swirl of mixed flavours of softies on the Mall Rd, in Manali Market...

Just some calming food to go with my BP Control low salt diet...

Eat... sleep... roll...read…cry…lie down under a tree... observe a ladybug... spot a spider... and never let go of an opportunity to hug one 🌲🐞🕷️

P. S. : Do you ever wonder how trees 🌲 🌳 look at you??? Looked down upon feels so good 😂 when it’s the tree!

No matter how overwhelming the inner turmoil or existential crisis that adults carry, children somehow have a way of cutting through it all. They ground you. They bring you back to your senses, back to your responsibilities, and remind you to focus on what needs to be done in the present moment.

It was one of those days after many gloomy ones—days filled with fasting, overthinking, listening to the ordeals of people on the ground, worrying about what was happening back home, and feeling utterly helpless.

Then came a day spent observing and documenting marine life along the Oregon coast, followed by a visit to a little bookstore in rural Oregon. Somewhere between tide pools, curious conversations, shelves of books, and the laughter and excitement of my children, the heaviness began to lift. It became clearer to me that children are our greatest hope. It is our responsibility to give them the space to grow into sensitive, responsible, socially and environmentally conscious, and resilient human beings.

Nature, books, and children have an extraordinary way of quietly putting life back into perspective.
