POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

HBCU Environmental Justice Technical Collaborative member Crystal T. Dixon took these photos from the @naacp 83rd Annual State Convention, held September 25–26 in High Point, North Carolina.

One of the highlights was an important Environmental Justice panel, featuring environmental advocate Sherri White-Williamson

The discussion focused on environmental inequities and the importance of making sure impacted communities have a voice in the decisions that affect their health, neighborhoods, and future.

Thank you, Crystal, for sharing a look at this important conversation and the work happening around environmental justice.

In honor of Women’s Month, we’re putting the women of the HEJTC Collaborative front and center—right where they belong.

Crystal T. Dixon is an Associate Professor of the Practice in the Environment and Sustainability Studies Program at Wake Forest University (WFU), with additional appointments in African American Studies, the Sabin Center for Environment and Sustainability, and the Department of Health and Exercise Science (HES). She made history as the first Black Teaching Professor promoted to the Associate rank in HES at WFU. Dixon is a Faculty Fellow for the Mellon Foundation–funded Environment and Epistemic Justice Initiative and a member of the university’s Climate Justice Collective. Her research explores the intersections of environmental racism, sustainability, and public health, with a focus on disaster preparedness and resilience in the U.S. and Caribbean.

Her work has been recognized for advancing equity and sustainability, including the 2026 Champion of Change Campus Sustainability Award. Invited by Melissa Harris-Perry to join the Anna Julia Cooper Center, she has collaborated with organizations such as The Nation and Community Change, and co-taught POL 210: Race, Sustainability, and Environmental Justice.

Dixon is Co-Director of the Rural Beacon Research Institute, translating community-based work into research, data-driven strategy, and policy insights. She is also the Founder of Mango Consulting, advising organizations including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and NASA.

She has served as a Governing Councilor of the Environment Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA), co-authoring a policy on the environmental justice impacts of COVID-19 medical waste. Her work has been supported by the NIH and NASA and presented at APHA and the FDA. Dixon also serves on the CleanAire NC Board of Directors.

We’re grateful for her voice, her work, and her contributions to HEJTC

Every policy is health policy.

Grateful for Greensboro Business League’s Policy and Prosperity Breakfast bringing together policymakers across the aisle, small business owners, and other community stakeholders to dialogue about issues important to health and economic wellbeing in the Triad. Our interests are represented well in this area, especially by Senator Gladys Robinson, Representative Amos Quick, and Senator Michael Garrett, who spoke on systemic healthcare and education policies that improve wellbeing for North Carolinians across generations. What a wonderful group of panelists!!
