Congratulations to our 2026 Glendale Community College Pulitzer Reporting Fellow, Maria Mesropian! She is a standout Political Science and History double major who is an active member of GCC’s Scholars Program. Mesropian will travel to Armenia this summer. Her reporting explores how war, displacement, and foreign rule have shaped the preservation and evolution of Armenian culture and identity across generations.

Thanks to the generous support from the Glendale College Foundation and the Glendale Community College District, our Pulitzer Center Consortium initiative provides speakers, seminars, and other engaging learning opportunities for GCC students. Glendale College is the only community college on the West Coast with this unique opportunity.

May 18, 2026, will always remain in my heart as a very special day.

I had the incredible honor and privilege of presenting myself, my Pulitzer Center articles about mental health, my personal story, and the story of my country, Georgia, to the students at Glendale Community College.

Professor Michelle Stonis, who organized this event for me, made everything feel so easy, welcoming, and flexible. The students were incredibly intelligent, curious, and eager to learn something new. I can proudly say that they truly appreciated and enjoyed my presentation.

Everything felt so familiar and warm to me. Many of the students were Armenian, and there was also one brilliant young lady from my country, Georgia. She was so excited and happy to meet me. I will never forget her kind words and the love she showed me.

It was truly a fantastic day. I gave two talks today for two different classes, and both experiences were wonderful. I loved connecting with the students, speaking with them, and building new friendships.

Life is all about giving and receiving. I believe the students learned a lot from my presentation, and I hope my story and experiences inspired them. My talk was deeply personal, educational, and informative.

Thank you to Pulitzer Center for this amazing opportunity, and thank you to Professor Michelle Stonis for making it all possible.

Forever grateful and happy,
Sissy

How many of these sound familiar?

All of them? You’re definitely not alone in feeling that way.

As college students navigate their academic journeys, they encounter numerous challenges that can trigger stress, anxiety, and even traumatic experiences. Being away from home—often for the first time—they rely on their college community for support. Professors, advisors, and other staff frequently step into caregiver roles, becoming a crucial support system for students in distress.

This is why trauma-informed practices in higher education are essential. By fostering a supportive and empathetic academic environment, colleges can better address students’ emotional and psychological needs while equipping educators with the tools to provide meaningful support.

It’s time to move beyond outdated models that focus solely on discipline and performance and instead embrace strategies that promote healing, resilience, and student success.

➡️If you’re looking for more FREE resources to support your campus community, whether you’re a professor, student leader, or staff member, visit our website for free trauma-informed guides and tools (link in bio). 🔗💜

Together, we can create a more supportive, resilient learning environment for everyone.
