I documented @project_elimu with the same intentions I document any other place, person or scene. Mainly, usually to reveal structure, to interrogate space, and to honour how people create possibility within it. Through this, I wonder: What do our spaces say about us? What do we inherit from them, and what do we resist? Project Elimu is home to Kibera's ballet dancers and a growing community of young creatives. Working with 413 children across 25 schools in Nairobi's informal settlements, the organisation runs weekly after-school programmes in ballet, creative writing, digital literacy, and other forms of arts and technology education. Every time I reach for my camera, I am not only documenting space , I am often witnessing how we are seen and unseen on our own terms. I try to retain as complete an image of the scene I have observed, a person I have met or an experience I have undergone deliberately to allow space for what the photograph allows us to see, and what it asks us to look at again. #documentaryphotographer #documentaryphotography #VisualStorytelling #ArtsEducation #Ballet #Kibera #ProjectElimu #SadatPhotoStories

We had an amazing time at our hybrid in-person and online Samata Session at @hiddendoorarts Festival in Edinburgh at the start of June! The session featured performances of brand new collaborations between @tinderbox.orchestra and @ronafoundation, @chitrakootcollective and @project_elimu along with a performance from @project_jagriti. We have spent the last few months working on these collaborations inspired by songs, poems and styles of music from each others experiences and cultures and we cannot wait to share them with you! Here is a clip of our rehearsal of 'Raised by Fire' from Tinderbox and Rosaline from the Rona Foundation!
