Spring has officially sprung at God’s Love this #EarthDay! 🌷These gorgeous tulips are here for all to enjoy before they make way for us to plant herbs on our rooftop garden. Our chefs will then use these herbs to enhance the flavor in our meals! 🥙 This is just one of our many sustainability efforts here at God’s Love. From sourcing wild-caught fish and antibiotic-free chicken, to ensuring our meal containers are recyclable and BPA-free, we’re stepping up for #sustainability! Shout out to some of our local partners who make these efforts possible: 🌶 single-source spices from @burlapandbarrel, 🥕 local produce from @heermancefarm, 🍜 upcycled veggie broth from @matriarkfoods, 🥦 rescued produce from @cityharvestnyc, 🌿 local herbs from @projecteats, 🥩 hormone-free beef from @hudson_charles, and more! A huge thank you to Shaine, Volunteer Service Specialist and our resident green thumb, for keeping our rooftop garden looking stunning! 🧑🏻‍🌾

Let’s talk about the impact of LOCALLY SOURCING

Moss has always seen sourcing locally as an unwavering value to being a restaurant & small business. We believe this is required to be a truly economically and socially conscious workplace & neighborhood institution. At Moss, an entire team of people work to find & source the highest quality, hyper-local products and produce with the greatest social & economic impact, knowing that the way we use our capital & the businesses we partner with are connected to our own values, to the food we make and to the community space we hope to nurture.

The restaurant industry has always relied on unsustainable business practices and we’ve felt strongly throughout our years of operation that it’s our responsibility to do all we can to diverge from this. We envision a system in which money circulates locally - where our neighbors & friends grow, cook and eat the food we serve. That the produce we procure is freshly harvested and travels very little to get to our door and only a few hours to get to your plate. That we not only know the farmers who grow and harvest our food but also the people who deliver it and the communities surrounding these food enterprises who reap the social and economic benefits. We want the food we make to give dignity to our employees who so skillfully and carefully work to make our community a healthier place.

We think it’s important to know that our costs reflect more than just the premium we pay our suppliers. The REAL cost of food supports our employees making a living wage, gives freedom to our suppliers to use their own capital in their communities as a force for good, and allows us to uphold the values to which we so strongly adhere to and actively commit to making food and environmental justice a part of our daily operations. This is what we mean when we talk about sourcing locally. Just some food for thought.

Last year, the Garden Conservancy launched a new granting initiative Gardens for Good. Through this program, we award grants to small public gardens and other nonprofit organizations within the United States making a significant impact in their communities through garden-based programming, with a focus on diverse populations. Grants are for general operating support and typically range from $5,000-$10,000; in 2021, we awarded eleven grants and plan to expand the program further this year.

The Garden Conservancy is now accepting grant applications for 2022! The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2022. Applications will be reviewed by an advisory committee, and grants will be awarded in May.

Link in bio for more information and application guidelines.

Please meet Linda Goode Bryant, one of the members of the Grant Committee responsible for selecting recipients of the Sky High Farm Grants. We met Linda early in our farming journey, and over the years she’s become one of our key thought partners and a clear and constant point of inspiration for us.

Linda is a Guggenheim Fellow, a Peabody Award recipient, and the founder of the legendary JAM Gallery, which was open from 1974-1986 (and has an exhibition coming up this fall at @themuseumofmodernart), and provided an early home to many influential black artists and artists of color who were otherwise barred access to the industry of the art world. She has since founded @projecteats, a nonprofit community-based farming organization that has developed multiple growing, distribution and education programs that view the engagement of neighbors and neighborhoods as integral to the growth and vitality of both.

Linda and our founder Dan Colen met each other at a curious and sparsely populated intersection where art, agriculture and justice meet, and it's growing busier by the day. Her unique position and trajectory, and the forthrightness with which she's claimed these dynamic elements as parts of an interrelated practice has all been deeply inspiring and instructional for Dan and Sky High as an organization. We know that such an unbounded original thinker will be the right ear for the grant proposals emanating from the Sky High community.

Linda - thank you for your faith in our work, and for joining us in launching this grant program. We’re so grateful for your friendship, leadership and support!
