A few weeks ago I wrote and published a book! Thanks to @thatelisegirl / @bothered.and.hot for doing the Illustrations ❤️🙏 and @crispichristi / @crispiprints for editing the book. You can find it on Bookshop.org, Barnes & Nobles, and on Amazon. (Link in bio) I wrote it for my friends & family, and all the people who influenced and inspired me in this lifetime. I tried to price it so each copy sold pays for a Taiji class! (It's more like two copies pays for a class), but I digress. More to come

I just returned from a residency at Kelly Strayhorn Theater in Pittsburgh doing dramaturgy for STORY BALLET, a slowdanger project that premieres September 25-27 at the Charles W. Eisemann Center for Performing Arts. I have been working on this project in-person and remotely since our residency at Jacob’s Pillow in March, and it has been one of the highlights of my year. • Most people who follow me here know me for my work as an astrologer—which is work that I love and that I share most often. Some of you also know that I have been a dance artist for decades, hold a PhD in dance studies and a BFA in dance, and that dramaturgy is one of my greatest loves. • When I talk about doing dramaturgy for a dance project, most people have no idea what that means. From my perspective, dramaturgy is about supporting the creation of a dance—being in dialogue with the choreographer(s) and sometimes the performers as well, watching, finding language for what I am seeing, offering feedback, asking questions, moving between practice and theory in real-time, finding the structure of what the dance wants to be and helping develop the project in those directions. • Unlike dance criticism—which I also love—dramaturgy is not commenting on something that is already finished. It is bringing many of the same skills that I bring to dance criticism and writing about dance into a creative process as a contribution to something that is still emerging/unfolding. • Dramaturgy is inherently collaborative, and in collaborative processes, we are also always developing our capacities and skills for communication, shared meaning making, navigating difference and conflict, and staying with uncertainty, with no answers that can ever finally be right or wrong—all of which not only support the development of a dance but also our capacities for ethical coexistence as citizens of a shared world. • I hope you have the opportunity to witness this project!
