Couldn't agree more, @projectlitcomm !
.
Jared Amato's wonderful book, Just Read It, will hold your hand at every step if you're looking to start or level up your choice reading program.
.
His joins a long line of respected voices calling for choice and empowerment for student readers.
.
It's absolutely ok to have full choice and whole class reads. At the same time. At different times.
.
There is room for classic and contemporary novels, poems, and short stories. For full text, graphic novels, audiobooks, and multimodal texts.
.
We're ELA. We teach incredibly fundamental skills - how to understand things, how to talk about things, how to communicate. We can share stories from across history, across cultures, across forms.
.
It's an honor. ❤️

I’ve created another set of WRAP cards that can be shared in every English classroom and library (and home)! These specific prompts help students (and adults) REFLECT on their reading identity and invite authentic CONVERSATION and community building. Simply download the PDF (linked in bio), print, laminate, and cut — and you’re good to go!

In today’s artificial and algorithmic age, it’s essential that we carve out consistent time to READ and WRAP (write, reflect, analyze, and participate). If not in our schools, then when? As always, reach out with any questions! Happy reading! #JustReadIt

To help celebrate the two-year anniversary of JUST READ IT, I’ve created a set of WRAP cards that can be shared in every English classroom and library! These prompts help students WRAP (write, reflect, analyze, and participate) about their reading, whether it’s a self-selected text, whole-class novel, or book-club pick. In today’s artificial age, it’s essential that we carve out consistent time for students to engage in REAL reading, thinking, and conversing. (If not in our schools, then when?) Will link the digital resource in my bio — as always, reach out with any questions! Happy reading! #JustReadIt

I distributed 40 copies of Nic Blake and the Remarkables, by Angie Thomas, to B40 students last week, thanks to a Schools Plus grant from the Santa Cruz Eddy Foundation. We cannot wait to host Angie Thomas in our library on 9/22 and talk about her next installment in this fantastic series. @projectlitcomm @angiethomas @scedfoundation

As we head into another school year, I love that the majority of our states have embraced @jonathanhaidt’s #phonefreeschools movement. A logical next step? Dedicating daily time for our READ and WRAP routine. In this algorithmic, artificial age, where all us are increasingly distracted, it’s critical that we help our young people learn to “lock in” and get lost in great books.

Be sure to check out my yearlong WRAP sequence, along with a whole bunch of literacy activities and resources, over on Substack. https://jarredamato.substack.com #justreadit

Teachers read in the summer, too! We are about to embark on a summer book study: Just Read It by Dr. Jarred Amato. @jarredamato25 @projectlitcomm
💙Thanks to our amazing English department for “always learning, always discovering”(Noguchi).
💙Thanks to Mrs. Pettaway for writing a Parent Guild grant for the books.
🧡Thanks to the Parent Guild for providing the funds.

As we wrap up the 24-25 school year and look ahead to the next one, I’m thrilled to host a virtual book study and planning session next month. All English teachers, librarians, and literacy leaders are welcome!

A few details: It will take place on Tuesday nights in June (6/3, 6/10, and 6/17) from 9:15-10:00 pm eastern. No cost, no pressure. Come for one night or all three. RSVP link is in my latest newsletter on Substack. I’ll send out a Google Meet invite closer to the event. A copy of Just Read It (use the code RAVEN25 for 25% off) is recommended but not required.

And here are a few specific things that I’d love to share and discuss with y’all:

📚 Developing a weekly Read and WRAP sequence for the 25-26 school year (including ways that we can incorporate grammar skills/concepts into our WRAP prompts).
📚 Updating our collection of poems to read and analyze with students throughout the year.
📚 Mapping out our Article of Week “sequence” (thematic text sets/mini-units along with standalone articles).
📚 Discussing new MG and YA releases (and any titles that students are digging lately).
📚 Answering any questions that folks may have!

For those who are wrapping up the school year in the coming days and weeks, congrats! For those who still have a solid month (or more) to go, we’ve got this.
