Join us for the weekend at Fantasycon! It was absolutely fantastic this year with lots of exciting author panels, fun role playing games and readings. Plus Bar Con, although it would have been good to spend a bit more time there.

Participating was great and I think I’ve caught the bug 👀 hopefully I can do it again next year, if @britishfantasysociety will let me lol! I’ve certainly got enough inspiration and book recs to see me through to next year! It was a pleasure meeting up with old friends - no matter how briefly - and making new ones. It was a pleasure hanging out with @alethearlyons and @pscwillis and seeing @joaosilvawrites briefly (although 😭 no photos). Happy days.

Thanks to @pscwillis and @meljrey for providing some of these photos.

I did two panels at fantasycon, one on religion in SFFH and one of dystopias. Thanks to the lovely panellists! We had great discussions. Also did a reading and was lucky enough to be with several friends (and 1 new friend).

I've also included a couple of panels I went to, but I didn't always have photos.

Shout out to @abeaumontwriter and @stephanieellis7963, my publisher sibs.

Also to @sophiavahdati's new book cover. If you got a copy, please send her a photo.

Thanks to @britishfantasysociety volunteers for a fantastic weekend.

Throwing out some Fantasycon highlights, because I’m still buzzing from the weekend! What a whirlwind of author panels and it was lovely to catch up with old friends and make some new ones! This won’t be the last post because I took so many photos and videos 👀

I did my first ever Fantasycon panel - Writer Beware: Tales from the Publishing Trenches, and did a reading of one of the Viking-inspired Dragon stories from The Blazing Book of Dragons to a live audience 🤩 I’m still puzzled as to how I managed to miss so many people who I know where there someone! Gutted that I couldn’t see all the panels! It was too good!

A lovely day mooching around Cambridge with an amazing writer friend and my daughter. We wandered a cute musesm, littered around trinket shops and strolled through the markets. 🥰

I ordered @pscwillis debut last summer and had it sent to my in-laws — my mistake! We’re only there once a year. So I’ve had to wait a looooong 12 months but it’s mine at last!

Yes it is, but also life is better with the amazing writing friends who have been on this journey with me for the past 5 years! It’s gone beyond helping each other with our writing, with our publishing journeys, and into helping each other with our lives. Team Tea and Books was set up back in the Twitter days, as a way to bring UK writers together, and it changed my life. Team Pitch n Bitch existed way back when I had no idea what a query letter was or a pitch event, and the international friends I found there gave me all the information and tools I needed to navigate a rapidly changing industry. Many of these people are still good friends of mine, and though the glory days of the writing community on Twitter are long gone, the friendships remain. And some of them are here 😊 I appreciate them so much 🙂

I didn't really take any pictures at Pride this year because crowds, small child to watch, and rain, but here's a couple of selfies and a pic with wonderful writer friends. 💜

I have just finished 460 words on Storytime, catching up missed Storytime efforts from yesterday, and completing the last bit I didn't *quite* achieve within the month of August for my August Writing Challenge. So, here's me summing up, with a huge thank you to @pscwillis @alethearlyons and @meljrey for the mutual support, reward surprises and companionship. 🧡 I definitely won't be stopping here as this challenge has seen me complete a Storytime episode for the first time in many months and make progress on my current novel WIP, also for the first time in a long time. Apparently, I'm rather extrinsically motivated and respond very well to the promise of rewards and all of you lovely people cheering on my daily efforts 😅 Thank you everyone! I'm hoping to balance a little bit more with Art Challenge achievements in the coming month as well, so hopefully you will get to see some little illustrations. Onwards to September!

P.S., No I did not create this post using AI! 🙄 I painstakingly went back and found all my relevant pictures to caption in relation to the goals. Not sure what has triggered that flag — maybe the Canva templates or maybe too many selfies in the midst 🤷🏻 But no, I wrote all this and took the photos apart from one stock photo of a library on the location goals page. My own efforts, thank you!

This tiny outdoor observation is no longer outdoors, but don't these look like *magic* beans? They're the seeds we're saving from the red flowered runner beans and I think they're beautiful.

Apologies for the quiet the last few days. I've been trying to make progress on my parent writers group planning, prepare for the existing local group (which unfortunately I no longer think I will be attending, so no more on that), and keep up on words, and posts have had to be a lower priority. I have *almost* completed my goals for the August Writing Challenge and just have to do some extra words on Storytime tonight to catch up, so I'm going to do another post later tonight once I've done those, wrapping that up and showing how I ticked off the various goals on my list! I know the algorithm won't be a big fan of the double post so if you could keep an eye out for the second one that would be wonderful 🧡

🎆𝐂𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐜🎆

Both of these main characters were so lovable to me. The instant connection they shared reminded me so much of early days of my relationship with my spouse, so obviously I was feeling all the feels. The way that they come together while also navigating the unique issues in their respective worlds was really heartwarming, each of them trying their best to prioritize and keep the other safe and learning about themselves along the way.

The story finds manages to weave real, big, current issues alongside this fantastical world where magic is balanced by relative goodness and it really does make the reader think about our own impact on the world around us. A lot of times YA books push a feeling of needing a big, tangible change in society (changing major school rules or laws, confronting figures of power) but I really appreciate that this story leaves us with a feeling that every act of kindness we perform helps to bring magic into our lives and heal the world around us.

The narration of the audiobook was also really well done. The differentiation between character voices was smooth and not overdone. There were a few times where I wished I had a physical copy to refer to. I occasionally felt a tiny bit lost in who’s perspective I was listening to but, to be completely honest, that’s probably largely a “me” problem because I pause in the middle of chapters and listen while surrounded by chaos. 😇

Overall, it’s the kind of book that presents heavy topics in a way that feels light and hopeful. A truly great book for a wide variety of readers, I would love to see young people picking this up!

Full disclosure, I received a copy of this audiobook at no cost in a giveaway hosted by the author. No review was requested, I'm posting my thoughts and opinions of my own will because it was a really sweet read and want you all to read it too. 🥰

Thank you to @pscwillis for sharing your book with me!
