“I am standing in the birthplace of the American novel, surrounded by the extraordinary, living world of Mark Twain.

The mighty Mississippi. The river Samuel Clemens once piloted as a steamboat captain. The boyhood home where his imagination took shape. Huck Finn’s house just behind it. Becky Thatcher’s across the cobblestone street.

Everywhere I turn, there is something astonishing. Twain’s words hanging from the streetlamps. Murals of his merits covering the buildings. Beautiful old architecture, historical markers, and streets that seem to have wandered straight out of his tall tales.

I am walking through the real geography of an imaginary world that changed America forever.

And tomorrow, I will launch my debut novel, @huckleberryjimbook, here in Hannibal, at the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum.

There is something profoundly moving about bringing this book to the very ground from which its questions first rose. This is where Twain encountered the voices, the children, and the contradictions that became his understandings.

Nearly 150 years later, we are still arguing over who these stories belong to, what they ask of us, and whether children should be allowed to read them. Huckleberry Jim was written inside that conversation.

After five and a half years of writing, to stand here with my novel in my hands, in front of the house where it all began, is an experience I scarcely have words for.

The beauty of Hannibal is that Twain is not confined to a museum or a bookshelf. He is everywhere. His imagination has become the architecture of an entire town.

Torres is the widely celebrated author of the National Book Award-winning novel Blackouts and We the Animals, which won the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award, was translated into fifteen languages, and was adapted into a feature film. Pushing the boundaries of form and modern storytelling, Torres is an essential and urgent voice in fiction and queer canons.

The event will include a lecture and reading, a Q&A with the audience and a book signing with copies for sell from @tridentbooks.

it’s harder than I ever could have known to revisit work that Otto summoned (and so much of this book holds his figure and presence within it) — but I see you in here, in the making of the poem, in the animals that rest and stalk within it. I see you and want you and want you.
