#Lookback at AURORA Biennial: ‘FuturePresentPast’

Jess Garland’s epic performance installation ‘Behind the Strings’ saw her share the stage with a host of incredible collaborators, platforming Black women musicians and their artistry. As well as basking in Garland’s mesmerizing harp-playing, the energetic sounds of bass, drums, and violins brought the Dallas City Hall to life. The performances were accompanied by Garland’s documentary of the same name, celebrating the trailblazing power of Black women instrumentalists.

‘FuturePresentPast’, AURORA’s sixth biennial exhibition, took place on November 16th to Dallas City Hall. This free event showcasee technology-based public art, thinking through community, health advocacy, environmental sustainability, and the impact of displacement and migration on evolving cities. By looking back at the past, what new ideas will be ignited about the future?

Last Saturday I premiered my third film; “Behind the Strings” @dallasaurora with @pegasus_media_project

My art installation also included performances by all Black women on string instruments. It’s important to change the narratives around genres and the representation of instrumentalists, composers and producers. Increasing access is not only my personal mission but it’s the work we do every day @swanstrings

Facades of Dallas(Hall):: What is a facade? A surface that speaks, && one stable enough to build belief around. Dallas Hall, the first and foremost @ SMU, with its grand neoclassical columns and iconic copper dome, exudes myth; wisdom, stability, power, and endurance.
It wears the mask of legacy, but in Dallas, where ambition relents like a ‘74 Ford Ranger, and where culture comes in the highest-gloss Benjamin Moore, && history just another commodity for sale to the highest real estate developer. Situated just a stone’s throw from Highland Park, one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country, Dallas Hall, like the campus its situated upon, is a monument to class exclusivity wrapped in public decorum. Like Dallas itself, a place of surface and spectacle, fashioned in proclaimed success and wealth, the building’s exterior facade is illuminated and mapped with a REALTIME artificially intelligent system that interprets, provokes, and reveals a monumental nature of artifice.
