Yesterday was really special. ❤️

More than 40 years later, some of the original folks from Muslim Gardens got together to reconnect and honor my mom.

For those who don’t know the story, we grew up on 6th & Van Buren, and somehow our house became the house. Everybody was there. 😂 There was always food, always somebody coming through, always something going on.

My mom created that. Through her cooking, her love, and just the way she welcomed everybody, our home became a safe space for so many of us. And growing up in D.C. during a time when we were losing so many young people to the streets, that mattered.

We were a Muslim family, and somewhere along the way our little community became known as Muslim Gardens.

Yesterday, looking around at people I’ve known since we were kids—and realizing that more than 40 years later, we’re still connected—was pretty amazing.

My mom didn’t set out to “build community.” She was just being who she was. She fed people. She loved people. She opened her home. And a whole community grew from it.

It was so good being back together with the originals. ❤️

Thank you Ren, Reggie, and Michelle for putting this together!

Muslim Gardens… more than 40 years later, and we’re still here. 🌿
