QSE25 Music Archive #8: ‘Death Marches On’ from Henry IV, Part I (2019) @qldshakespeare Music & lyrics by @silvan.rus Death marches on with his scythe and cloak. A faceless skull lullabies in his hood. Moths fill his pockets, Names on his docket, Scrolled into a wand spelling, “heaven” or “hell.” As the clock struck nine, the axe fell, a pendulum, For Death plays Time better than Burbage could. Off goes a head! Crows Fly from the scarecrows. Tick tock, time for a death bead tune. O who’s to see my scythe tonight? Gullible or wise? Halloo my name to the airs, to the earth. Budda-bing, budda-boom, budda bum! Lovers in a trance sigh with endless coos They kiss away the night before the war sweeps through. Down goes her man Shot in no man’s land. O General! General! Athens in a bloody pool. Emerald! Emerald! The sea was made of emerald. O who’s to see my scythe tonight? Gullible or wise? Halloo my name to the airs, to the earth. Budda-bing, budda-boom, budda bum!

QSE25 Music Archive #7: ‘A Knight’s Tale’ from @qldshakespeare 2015 production of Henry IV, Part 1. I first wrote this song in 2008 after Heath Ledger died. I loved the movie ‘A Knight’s Tale’ and very much believed in the lines: “Can a man change the stars? Yes William. If he believes enough, a man can do anything!” So the song is a dedication to Ledger. But the lyrics are inspired by Shakespeare’s Two Noble Kinsman, which was inspired by Chaucer’s The Knight’s Tale, which was inspired by Greek mythology. I grew up listening to Celtic music and learned the guitar jamming to that syncopated rhythm. Music & lyrics by @silvan.rus No day has been fought so hard before! In an era known for battle and war, A champion stood before his king, This knight invited to feast with him. In the hall, he heard a voice so sweet and soft and wonderful. Memory saw nothing but a woman that he had been longing for. Now this eager man of chivalry Felt the warmth of his sweet Emily. She calmed the storms that roared within And asked if she could stay with him. But the needs too great from royalty; The man restrained from loyalty. His soldiers sang as he would be Embraced by arms a-desperately. As one prayed to Mars, the other prayed to Venus, Beginning from afar, to be undefeated. Lovers, all unite! Lovers, all lament them! Tragedy becomes
 home!

QSE 25th Birthday Music Archive #5: Twelfth Night era 2016. This one is called ‘Carpe Noctem’ and we got a record of the full band at work for this one. How cool is Lil’s ice cream truck piano riff? Music and lyrics by @silvan.rus Bass: @colinwsmithau Piano: @lili_dustea Mandolin: Rob Pensalfini Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Luna Park! Enter the world when gates are locked and the cityscape is dark. The night of October 31st forever revolves around. Tonight, I invite you all to dance beneath the silly clown. Ladies and gentleman, deny the garish sun! Seize the night and show your teeth, the play has just begun Becoming to life in city lights. This amphitheater Evolves into a Brizzy like the Bard’s Verona. Look at you little puppets dancing along to strings, Climbing higher and higher wishing you had some wings. Stumbling back and forth because you’ve had to much to drink. Ask yourselves, “why are you here?” Show me your teeth, show me your teeth. Don’t be insecure, Crooked or not, you’ll find a friend who finds yourself attractive. Attractive! Attractive! O, what an ugly word. Take it or leave it, like it or not, s’better to be absurd.

QSE Music Archive #4: ‘Settle the Debt’ from the 2014 production of TITUS. Music & lyrics by @silvan.rus See this little bag of gold Hidden beneath the trunk of this tree, Though you think me mad or bold, Dividends will pay, you’ll see! Silent deaths as heads are rolled Off their shoulders down to feet. All because of a bag of gold Written unto a page of defeat. Saturn will fall and derail. Death is to me if I fail. Tiger, deliver death’s mail. Die, Andronicus! Settle the debt, settle the debt. Hands off! Settle the debt, settle the debt. Tongues out! Settle the debt, settle the debt. Sound off! Settle the debt, settle the debt. Break down. Enter Tamora, my sweet soul Sitting on top of the throne as queen. Ready or not the heart of Rome Will tie her noose of arteries. Look! I stole his war-like hand, Traded for a handsome fee: Titus’ son’s heads unmanned – Tamora, now’s the time to kiss me! Break down.

Now to the 2014 'Titus' era for QSE Music Archive #3. Rocking the bass that season. This one is called 'The General and the Heretic'. Music & lyrics by @silvan.rus Twenty-three sons ago, when honour Held his higher place in Rome, I’d honour Happily the house of home in honour, My eye was never on the throne. Then betrayal took his vengeful hand. Dishonoured Andronicus, and this my land, deflowered. Shame has stolen all my love and power. Honour, do you understand? O, my love, Lavinia! My hand! Who fought for Rome? My sword that was once protector Now a stone of bone hung up for show. Settle down, settle down! Aaron’s here to the rescue. Puppetry, puppetry! Dancing on my strings. Vanity, vanity! Blushing with your pale hue. Subtlety is an art form. This is what you asked for. Break it down, break it down! Holla, if you understand. Tamora, Tamora, burning with a sting. Heretic, Heretic! Call you me Barbarian? Honour this: your religion’s standing on my middle finger. 🖕 O, my love, Lavinia! My hand! Who fought for Rome? My sword that was once protector Now a stone of bone hung up for show. Subtlety is an artform. This is what you asked for...

QSE Music Archive #2: 'Come unto these yellow sands' from the 2014 production of The Tempest. Ariel sings, luring Ferdinand into Prospero's plot. Lyrics: Come unto these yellow sands, And then take hands. Curtsied when you have, and kissed The wild waves whist. Foot it featly here and there, And sweet sprites bear The burden. Hark, hark! Burden dispersedly, within: Bow-wow. The watchdogs bark. Burden dispersedly, within: Bow-wow. Hark, hark! I hear The strain of strutting chanticleer Cry cock-a-diddle-dow. Music by @silvan.rus

In the spirit of Queensland Day and in the lead up to the @qldshakespeare 25th Birthday Gala, I'll be sharing the music I wrote for their shows. This one is called 'Drunk & Sick of Sailing', which featured in QSE's 2014 production of The Tempest, and my 2nd ever contribution to the QSE soundscape. Link in bio for the QSE 25th Birthday event details. Happy @qldday ! Music & lyrics by @silvan.rus : Quick! Quick! The ship is going down. Grab the rum and hide away. Drink! Drink! Before we all die. The barrel's by the cannon bay. Sink! Sink! Sink with the king. Holy God, I'm drowning! Let the barrel take me to the shore drunk and sick of sailing! (×2) Look! Look! A Caliban! Man, it's really creepy. Dollar bills! Marketable! Gold is what I'm seeing. Hey! Hey! Stop drinking our rum! Dirty beast now fleeing. I'm thirsty! Let's drink some more. Drunk and sick of sailing. Who cares! We are safe on the shore drunk and sick of sailing. Let the barrel take me to the floor drunk and sick of sailing. Let the barrel take me to the floor drunk and sick of sailing.
