Happy Birthday cheetah girls 🎂 🥳

Triplets Fossey, Murie and Maathai turn 6 years old today! I hope that they get a super awesome enrichment today to celebrate their special day.

I don't know how to tell the girls apart, so I don't know who this is and if it's one of triplets or the twins. So I apologize if I have the incorrect cat.

Did you know? Cheetahs Don’t Roar, They Meow and Purr

There’s nothing scary about the noises a cheetah makes. Unlike lions, which are known for their ferocious roars, cheetahs sound more like your average house cat. They meow and purr. They also make chirps and churring sounds.

There are four big cats that roar: lions, tigers, leopards, and jaguars. They are able to make their intimidating noises because they have a ligament instead of the epihyal bone in the voice box. The ligament stretches, creating lower sounds. Cheetahs have a fixed voice box with divided vocal cords. Like “small cats,” it allows them to purr but they can't roar (and lions can't purr).

Details

If you have ever been to Disney's Animal Kingdom, you know how incredible the details are. While walking the park this past weekend, I was looking to get a couple of shots that showcase the DAK details in a way that I haven't seen posted elsewhere.

I took this at 428mm to help convey the depth of the scene that has so many layers of details. I was going to say where I took this in the caption, but maybe this does double duty as a #whereinthedakwednesday too 🤔. Any guesses where this is?

African Elephant 🐘

When riding the safari, there is sometimes a brief and tiny window of opportunity to get the shot and then it's gone. The second elephant yard is incredibly lush with growth along the road. This makes getting the shot a real challenge sometimes.

African elephants are the largest animals walking the Earth. Their herds wander through 37 countries in Africa. They are easily recognized by their trunk that is used for communication and handling objects. Their large ears allow them to radiate excess heat. Upper incisor teeth develop into tusks in African elephants and grow throughout their lifetime.

Estelle & Maisel

Say hello to these two incredibly cute female springbok.
They were born a month apart last August and September.
If they had a bow on their head, they would look like Clarice from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

They can be seen at the Animal Kingdom Lodge on the Uzima savanna at Jambo House.

The common name "springbok" comes from the Afrikaans words spring ("jump") and bok ("antelope"). The springbok can achieve top speeds of around 55 miles per hour and can leap 11 feet into the air.

Springboks range from 27.5 to 35 inches in height, excluding the neck and head, and weigh roughly 66 to 106 pounds. Both adult males and females have horns.

Okapi

Female Okapi Olivia wanted to remind you that today is #tongueouttuesday

The okapi has a long, dark, prehensile tongue, like a giraffe's, to help it strip the buds and young leaves from the understory brush of its rainforest home.

Their tongue is 12-14 inches (30-36 cm) and they will use it to lick their ears and eyes.

Springbok

Meet Estelle and Maisel. These cute little springbok baby girls can be found at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. More specifically, they are on the Jambo House Uzima savanna.

Gestation lasts for 5 to 6 months and one young is born. For the first day or two, the baby stays hidden in long grass or a bush, then with its mother joins a nursery herd. At 6 months of age, they are weaned. Females remain with the herd while young males join a herd of bachelor animals.
