So proud to find my hard copies of the Winter 2025 edition of Queen’s Quarterly in my mailbox today. My mother is too. (I’m giving her one of the copies.) Writing ‘How to Restore a Family Quilt’ took many drafts over the last 5 years. Thank you to the writers who provided early feedback.

It took so long to unpack what I wanted to tell in this essay. Writing about intergenerational issues isn’t easy. Taking a hard look at your part in it was painful. It was worth it.

Thank you to Queen’s Quarterly for publishing this essay and giving a nagging need to share this content a place to land.

The quilt in question is spread along the back of my couch. The wide variety of fabric textures and what I suspect are very old and stubborn smells, makes it a favourite with my foster kitty lovey doveys.

Oh - and introducing my new foster: McLaren. I thought the name was silly until I saw her ran around. She is FAST. So far, she’s an excellent writing buddy. She lounged on the chair next to me all day. I wondered what I was thinking, putting a chair beside my desk, but I knew. It’s for cats, of course.
