Black-capped Chickadee | Poecile atricapillus | Pemaquid Point, Maine

Small, curious, and full of personality, the Black-capped Chickadee is a familiar sight in Maine’s woodlands. With its distinctive black cap, white cheeks, and soft gray plumage, this little songbird is easy to recognize and always a pleasure to photograph.

An Evening on the Hackensack River

Tonight I had the opportunity to join members of the Bergen County Audubon Society and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority for a pontoon cruise through the Meadowlands.

From the water, the landscape takes on a completely different character. We passed beneath historic railroad bridges, watched trains move across the river, took in the Manhattan skyline, and spent the evening looking for birds and other wildlife.

We recorded 24 bird species during the cruise.

What struck me most was the contrast. Here we were, essentially in the shadow of New York City, surrounded by major transportation infrastructure and industry, yet the Meadowlands was alive with biodiversity.

That is what makes this place so special. The Meadowlands isn’t simply open space between cities. It is a dynamic ecosystem, a place where people, industry, water, marsh, and wildlife all exist side by side.

A beautiful evening of exploration, learning, and appreciating one of New Jersey’s most remarkable landscapes.

Tell me you’re a bird nerd without telling me you’re a bird nerd. 🐦📸

When your car’s passenger seat looks more like a mobile birding station than a place for passengers! 😂

Field guides? Check. Camera and telephoto lens? Check. Binoculars? Check. A whole collection of birding resources? Absolutely!

You never know when the next great birding opportunity will present itself, so it’s best to be prepared. Besides, you can never have too many bird guides, right?

Your turn! What’s the one thing that gives away your inner bird nerd? 🦅

Oriental Magpie-Robin | Copsychus saularis | Shenzhen, China 🇨🇳

One of those little birds that can easily catch your eye! The Oriental Magpie-Robin is a beautiful combination of glossy black and white, with a long tail and plenty of personality.

During my time in Shenzhen, China, I had the opportunity to photograph this bird in several different poses, from foraging in the grass and catching insects to perching and taking a closer look at its surroundings. It’s always a pleasure to slow down, observe wildlife, and capture those little moments that make bird photography so rewarding.

Whether exploring the natural world or discovering wildlife in an urban environment, there’s always something fascinating to see!

A Perfect Autumn Day at Teaneck Creek Conservancy!

What a wonderful day for a bird and nature walk! Today, I had the pleasure of serving as one of the field trip leaders for the Bergen County Audubon Society’s walk at Teaneck Creek Conservancy. We had a fantastic turnout and couldn’t have asked for better autumn weather.

Our group identified 24 bird species, including Red-shouldered Hawk, Bald Eagle, Belted Kingfisher, Palm Warblers, and numerous Eastern Phoebes, along with Blue Jays, Northern Mockingbirds, and many others.

We also enjoyed the beautiful fall scenery and the newly installed “Field of Flowers” art exhibit, created by the Rodda Center’s clay sculpting class in Teaneck. It’s a wonderful example of how art, nature, and community come together.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us today, our fellow BCAS volunteers, and the Teaneck Creek Conservancy for making it such an enjoyable morning. It’s always a pleasure to connect with fellow nature enthusiasts and share our appreciation for local wildlife and green spaces.

Coming up this Sunday! Join us on October 4, from 9 AM to 3 PM, at Richard W. DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst for the Meadowlands Birding Festival. Come celebrate birds, nature, and conservation with the Bergen County Audubon Society and other environmental organizations.

Hope to see you there!

Today’s BCAS Bird & Nature Walk at State Line Lookout was a picture-perfect day! ☀️🌎🦅

While we didn’t see a huge number of birds, it was definitely quality over quantity, with several raptors and other species making an appearance.

We also enjoyed plenty of pollinators, including Monarchs, skippers, and bees. Unfortunately, there were also plenty of spotted lanternflies, an invasive species we’d all rather see fewer of! 🦋🐝🐞

A big thank you to everyone who came out and shared this beautiful morning with us. What a great day to be outside!

A beautiful morning exploring the Frank M. Chapman Birding Trail in Teaneck with the @bergencountyaudubon

More than 20 birders and nature enthusiasts joined us to explore this hidden natural space along the Hackensack River Greenway. Over the course of our walk, we recorded 22 bird species, including Cooper’s Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Eastern Warbling Vireo, Fish Crow, Northern Waterthrush, and Northern Cardinal.

Of course, birding is about more than checking species off a list. Along the way, we shared observations, enjoyed unexpected wildlife encounters, and appreciated the importance of protecting and exploring the natural spaces right in our own communities.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for another great BCAS Bird and Wildlife Walk!

An incredible evening of birding and wildlife photography at Richard W. DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, with the Bergen County Audubon Society. 🌅🦅

We explored the Meadowlands wetlands, watched for birds, shared sightings, and enjoyed a beautiful sunset over one of New Jersey’s most unique urban nature preserves.

It’s always amazing to experience New Jersey birding, birdwatching, nature photography, and wildlife in a place surrounded by the New York metropolitan area.

Another great evening connecting people with nature, photography, and conservation.

Spotted Dove | Spilopelia chinensis | Shenzhen, China 🇨🇳

Some birds grab your attention because of their colors. Others do it with their subtle beauty.

I came across this Spotted Dove while photographing birds in Shenzhen, and its soft gray and brown plumage, distinctive spotted collar, and striking orange eye immediately caught my attention.

Perched quietly among the branches, this bird gave me the opportunity to capture some of the details that make this species so beautiful.

Another lifer from an incredible few weeks of birding in China. 🇨🇳
