London (Brasil, 2026)

Premiering in the Orizzonti competition at the 83rd Venice Film Festival, Edoardo Gabbriellini’s The City of the Living is loosely adapted from Nicola Lagioia’s book about a 2016 case that shook Italy. The film is produced by Eagle Pictures, Cinemaundici and Lungta Film.

Luca, played by Emanuele Maria Di Stefano, is 23, works on his father’s candy truck, loves his girlfriend Marta and is saving for a place of his own in a city that keeps him on its edges.

Gabbriellini keeps the tragedy off screen and offers no explanation, staying instead with the people Luca leaves behind. A quiet, aching coming-of-age story about the absurdity of fate.

Singer and actress Claire Pommet, known as Pomme, leads Léa Domenach’s A Man’s Skin, the medieval musical fantasy closing Venice’s Giornate degli Autori section. She plays Princess Blanche, who dons a magical skin that turns her into a man to get close to the army commander she has been forced to marry, alongside Catherine Deneuve and Stefan Crépon.

Campy, melodic and unafraid to have fun with same sex attraction in the Middle Ages, the film still keeps real bite on gender and power. 4/5.

“It’s no small thing to be made a saint, especially when you’re alive and kicking. In spite of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s warnings not to let it go to my head, I had to take it seriously [...] I dithered about my costume like any old queen off to a ball. Should I be plain ordinary Joe Saint, or something a little more glittering? I gave in to temptation and chose the sparkling golden coronation robe that Steven had worn as Edward II.”

On Sunday 22 September 1991, 35 years ago today, Derek Jarman was canonised as the first saint of the London House of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a group of queer activist nuns who performed radical queer and left-wing activism with the aim to “expiate stigmatic guilt and promulgate universal joy.”

The ceremony took place in the garden of Derek’s beloved Prospect Cottage — a fittingly strange setting for a saint-making: windblown shingle, the English Channel, a nuclear power station on the horizon, and Derek himself dressed in gold. There, the Sisters declared him “Saint Derek of Dungeness of the Order of Celluloid Knights.”

Extract from ‘Smiling in Slow Motion’ by Derek Jarman, London Vintage, 2001.

Many thanks to everyone who made these days so special.

Miglior Film a Venezia Orizzonti e Queer Lion 2025.

Vitaly leaves Ukraine for Germany, chasing a new name, a new voice, and a version of himself with no stutter. Mykyta Gibalenko’s debut feature, playing at Venice Film Festival, follows him settling into a new city and a new identity, until his mother and sister are forced to leave home too, and his self-imposed exile collides with theirs.

The film was nominated for the Queer Lion at Venice Film Festival 2026.

Camouflage is a promising if uneven debut, sharp on identity and exile but thinner on the queerness at its centre.
