On July 8th @strickler76 became only the second person on a SUP to complete the Race To Alaska! A journey of 750 miles in 21 days!

He paddled a custom ONE SUP board that was designed specifically for the R2AK.
At 17'6" x 26" with a rudder, it was perfectly suited to the variable conditions that the West Coast can throw at you, while carrying everything you might need.

The tides of Seymour Narrows are humbling. This is not a river; this is the Pacific Ocean, rushing into the Salish Sea. Approximately 850,000 cubic meters of water slide in and out at each tide change, through a passage roughly 5 km long, 750m wide, and 100m deep. Recap of this weekend at the @woodenboatfestival in Port Townsend, Washington! We were lucky enough to make it to the #r2ak Blazer Party and the schooner race on the @schoonerzodiac ⛵️ (Then plans changed and I had to take care of my kiddo who wasn’t feeling well).

Years ago I had to choose between living on salt water or in the cold mountains, and the mountains won, but geez I still feel the salt water in my veins 😅 This was such an amazing way to get back on the water. The Zodiac crew was amazing and welcoming! We’re already planning on coming back next year, and hopefully no one gets sick 🫶🏻

Being back home, the best thing we could do coming off Race to Alaska was get right back to the work that is the reason we were racing in the first place — getting out on the water with veterans, seniors, young adults, and anyone navigating rough waters, each of them stepping off the boat lighter than they got on.

We've learned it twice now: the result was never the point. The effort is. The intention is.

We sail for people whose everyday lives ask more of them than this race ever will — because everyone deserves a place that hands a little back.

Life is hard. Give yourself a little grace, keep pressing on, and if life is feeling like too much, give us a call for some recalibration on the water.

Huge thank you to @flashcaf_whidbey_island_ for keeping us caffeinated during the race! They make a super delicious coffee concentrate that you just add water to, hot or cold. Or you can just take a shot of it straight as demonstrated in the video. Cannot emphasize enough how nice it was to have delicious coffee that was literally as easy as it gets to make during the race, really keep our spirits up! Highly highly recommend for your next beat upwind ☕️

Also shoutout to @cal20adelie for the jetboil spigot inspiration. We were able to have hot water in nearly all conditions with no worry of burning ourselves.

Three incredible sea kayakers. Three historic finishes. One legendary kayak.

@team_rainy_r2ak (Yota Kano, Prince Rupert, BC) powered a @rockpoolkayaksofficial Taran 16 to the finish in an astonishing 18 days, 5 hours, and 21 minutes, crossing the line alongside Team Let's Wing It (Martin Rother @rother625, North Vancouver, BC) in a Rockpool Taran 18.

Team Belly Full of Tea (Esther Wheeler @wheelerest, Sydney, Australia) also completed the race in her Rockpool Taran 18, becoming the first female soloist ever to finish the @racetoalaska.

The Race to Alaska is one of the toughest endurance events on the planet - 750+ miles of cold water, powerful currents, changing weather, and no motors. To see three Tarans not only finish but make history speaks volumes about the speed, efficiency, seaworthiness, and confidence these kayaks inspire in the hands of skilled paddlers.

A huge congratulations to Yota, Martin, and Esther on achievements that will be remembered for years to come 👏

He’s done it 💯💯💯 Before setting off on the Race to Alaska, Eric Strickler @strickler76 of Team Apple Bottom Boy said:

“I can because I must.”

Now, after 21 days and 750 miles, he’s done exactly that.

Eric has officially completed the @racetoalaska, becoming just the second stand-up paddleboarder EVER to finish this legendary event 💪💪💪

For 750 miles, he stood on his board through changing weather, relentless tides, powerful currents and the physical and mental challenges that define one of the toughest endurance races on the planet.

His words have become reality. The journey is complete, and it’s now in the history books.

My morning routine (R2AK bed time) for the last 21 days has come to an abrupt halt. It’s all over I’m happy they finished but disappointed the event is no more.

I’m a big fan of the short handed competitors so a jolly big well done to you all, this event is really more about you than steak knives.
