I have many happy childhood memories of harvest festivals growing up in a tiny village in West Sussex. Families would gather around the church where colourful fruit and veg would be stacked up around the big wooden doors and it felt like a joyful time to celebrate the season. Now, we have much less of a connection to our food, to the land and to the communities we live in, and I wanted to try and rebuild some of that connection and celebrate harvest, celebrate crafts linked to nature and celebrate this beautiful season where the earth gives so much.

When Sara Venn, founder of Edible Bristol and inspirationl food and gardening activist, passed away last summer, I wanted to do something positive. So I set up this event in her memory to raise money for the great work her son Noah continues to do with @ediblebristol growing fresh fruit and veg for food banks. She made me feel hopeful about the future, however bleak it seemed, and I want to raise money for and awareness of people doing great things in the growing community. Bristol is full of so many great growing groups, some of whom will be at the Harvest Festival, and full of great craftspeople who work with nature to preserve its beauty and make the most of its materials.

At this year's Harvest Festival, there is community banner printing with @rosannaprints , willow bird feeder weaving with @bristolbaskets , string making from plants with @rachellambertforaging, sandcasting with @issibulloch. There is a book Q&A and signing with @lialeendertz, local author of the bestselling Seasonal Almanac guide which is celebating its 10th edition and is all about rituals and gatherings like this one. There will be paper crafting, candle rolling, ink making, apple ID'ing and more. Enjoy delicious cider and seasonal food from @dickwillowsfarm and homemade tea and cakes.

Come and celebrate autumn in all its colourful glory and raise money for a great cause. Bring any gluts from your garden and allotments to share, seeds you want to donate and maybe even give your time to help one of the great community growing projects. I look forward to celebrating harvest time with you all! x

New skill unlocked 🌿

Gathering Reed Mace aka Bullrushes for basket making.
Ever since I attended a workshop on cordage run by @rachellambertforaging and purchased the book Wild Basketry by Ruby Taylor @nativehands.uk,
I have become well and truly obsessed with collecting any plant material that I can turn into something useful.

Earlier this week I seized the chance to go along to the Future of Arts & Crafts @standennt curated by @sussexcontemporary . When I'd dropped off my spoon, all the other artworks were still wrapped for transit, so I hadn't had a chance to see them. I was truly awed and even more proud to be selected to be amongst such talented company.

I spent ages looking and admiring them. As a descendent of generations of chandelier makers I particularly loved the honeysuckle chandelier by @lydia.asscher , as well as the fantastic metal sculpture by Jon Mills.

The chair made by my friend @julierignellbasketry looked great alongside a black arts & crafts cabinet. Her insertion of a thorny rose branch in the back has led to the room invigilator dubbing it the 'naughty' chair.

In the dining room, along with my spoon, the painting of a beautiful spoon by @janineshute caught my eye hanging above the sideboard. As did the incredible dandelion vase in the kitchen, made by Rachel Lambert. She must have picked, dried and corded an awful lot of stems to make such a big piece.

Judging by the works on show, there's definitely a great future for the Arts & Crafts movement.

Reflections on five years of Newlyn Fermentary

Over the next few days we’ll be looking back on the last few years of our project.

We are food producers, sauerkraut makers, farmers’ market frequenters.. but we also love collaborating, with both culinary wizards and visual creatives. In the earlier days before our batches grew to over 100kg, we found more time to work on fun projects like using waste beetroot from our water kefir to hand-dye papers and fabrics (thank you HoWl) or responding to @rachellambertforaging community foraged dandelion root to create dandelion kefir cola or exhibiting @jethro_photo under water seaweed photographs to launch our Cornish Seaweed Kraut @cornishseaweed .

Each month, Rachel Lambert – foraging guide, artisan maker and award-winning author – writes a journal for us, reflecting on the changing seasons and observations on nature and the landscape around us. We call it Rosyansow, the Cornish word for wanderings or ramblings, an apt name for a thoughtful conversation about what’s in season in nature right now.

For the month of June, Rachel has written about insects, pollination and the hawthorn tree for us – very relevant in a month in which we’re running lots of entomology events!

You can find the journal in the news section of our website, and we will also link in our bio.
