Scenes from the road: RoundCat Rally 2026: Day 3.

From the perspective of an American or European driving enthusiast, sub 100hp cars are comical and not to be treated as true enthusiast cars. They haven’t yet experienced the pleasure of kei cars.

In Japan, these hot kei cars are perfectly suited for the quiet mountain roads where a 911 would struggle to pass.

Our Hondas are equipped with the complete @spoon_typeone tuning package which bumps the power from 64 to 98hp at the wheels (transforming the driving experience).
We have @yokohama.rubber_jp Advans on all of our cars for their excellent performance in both wet and dry conditions.

Between the mountain road sections of Day 2, the rally participants enjoyed the old town of Takayama Gifu and dinner in Hakuba Nagano.

Day 3 of the RoundCat Rally was a choose-your-own-adventure day, and we decided to hang around Hakuba.

We got an early start with coffee at the Starbucks inside Snow Peak Base Camp, overlooking the ski jumps where events were held during the 1998 Winter Olympics. Then we took the gondola to the top of the mountain for snacks, a little shopping, and some three wheel dirt trike riding before squeezing in a few more tourist activities.

This was a really fun one. Over 700 miles on the back of a single-cylinder scooter, half of it done alongside @thesmokingtire and @racing_ali on the way from Los Angeles to Monterey, all in three days time.

Charming, compact, and great for carving canyons without anyone around you noticing, the Vespa 310 is a hilariously fun time. You’d be hard pressed to have a better time on something with 3x the horsepower.

We saw otters and walrus, ate excellent meals, hopped around Monterey without the crowds of Car Week, and parked basically wherever we wanted. The Vespa 310 was a great ride along some of California’s best and most beautiful roads, received with smiles and thumbs up everywhere we went, and even with just 25 horsepower on tap, it was enough for long stretches of highway travel.

The fuel gauge is pessimistic enough to give you an anxiety attack if you’re not careful, but the Vespa returned as high as 70 mpg for me, with a still-astonishing low of around 40 mpg when we rode over the 105-degree mountain passes at speed. Oh and my new Seiko Prospex felt perfect on my wrist the whole way - a great, light riding watch.

Special thanks to @coldheartedsnek and @vespa for the loaner and for letting me put all those miles on the odometer.

Matt & Hanna had a party… and this is the only evidence 🙏♥️🎬

I’m not a party person but finding the right corner, with the right group of people, early enough in the evening… makes all the difference. Grateful for our tribe. Thank you H&M 🙏♥️✨
