What happens when an artist steps inside the world of medicine?

We made a video to show you.

HU:MAN is a two-year Artist Residency at Stanford School of Medicine, created by Medical Humanities & the Arts Director Bryant Lin, MD, MEng, and Director for Visual Arts Lauren Toomer, MFA and launched in 2025.

The residency brings established artists into clinical care and research settings, where they connect with patients, caregivers, providers, staff, and researchers, creating space for new ways of seeing, questioning, and understanding medicine through art.

For the 2025–2027 residency, artists are embedded across Medical Humanities & the Arts, the Laurie J. Girand Center for Biomedical Ethics, Chemical & Systems Biology, Biochemistry, and Pediatrics.

Featuring: Artist in Residence Ryan Martinez, MFA, Drs. Bryant Lin and Aaron Straight, Ellen Oh, Antonia Dapena-Tretter, and Healthy Humor’s Dr. Dimples and Dr. Magpie.

@Sufjan “Fourth of July (April Base Version)”

Filmed by Michael O’Neal (@mo) and Adam Prieto (@radamprieto)

“The evil it spread like a fever ahead
It was night when you died, my firefly
What could I have said to raise you from the dead?
Oh could I be the sky on the fourth of July?

Well you do enough talk
My little hawk, why do you cry?
Tell me what did you learn from the Tillamook burn?
Or the Fourth of July?
We’re all gonna die.

Sitting at the bed with the halo at your head
Was it all a disguise, like Junior High
Where everything was fiction, future, and prediction
Now where am I? My fading supply

Did you get enough love, my little dove
Why do you cry?
And I’m sorry I left, but it was for the best
Though it never felt right
My little Versailles.

The hospital asked should the body be cast
Before I say goodbye, my star in the sky
Such a funny thought to wrap you up in cloth
Do you find it all right, my dragonfly?

Shall we look at the moon, my little loon
Why do you cry?
Make the most of your life, while it is rife
While it is light

Well you do enough talk
My little hawk, why do you cry?
Tell me what did you learn from the Tillamook burn?
Or the Fourth of July?
We’re all gonna die.”

Welcoming the year of the fire horse

Here are some of the horses we’ve featured on @wepresent

I’m knee-deep in a crippling horse era

Writers are now actively pitching me horse-related stories because they know it’ll work

Instagram only serves me horse-based content

It’s all getting a bit out of hand

Anyway happy lunar new year ! Xx
