That’s a wrap on Transom 25. 🧡

Twenty-five years. One unforgettable weekend in Woods Hole. Swipe through for a few of our favorite moments: the talks, the reunions, the strangers who became friends, and one very big, very deserved tribute to our founder, Jay Allison.

Thank you to every storyteller, scientist, presenter, volunteer, and friend who showed up and made this what it was. We hope you’re leaving refreshed and ready to go make some great radio.

Here’s the thing about the next 25 years: they happen because this community makes them happen. If Transom has ever meant something to you, help us keep the door open — even $5/month genuinely moves the needle. Donate link in bio, and help us spread the word far and wide. 📻

A challenge for your Wednesday!

“Reported stories, no matter how great they are, insert the reporter’s sensibility and style into the narrative... Along with the story, you notice the podium from which it is told,” Jay Allison wrote in the 2017 forward to “Radio Diaries: DIY Handbook.” He continued, “Un-narrated pieces, on the other hand, arise from their sources and become a kind of time capsule of human experience, capturing an undiluted essence, feeling real.”

Try your hand at making a non-narrated audio piece. It’s both harder and easier than you think. Give it a go – and look to Radio Diaries for inspiration.

This week @latinousa shares an episode of "The Unmarked Graveyard: Stories from Hart Island" podcast, from @radiodiaries.

When Annette Vega was in elementary school, she found out the man she called “dad” wasn’t her biological father. But all she knew was that her mom had had a teenage romance with a guy named Angel Garcia. Annette has searched for Angel for more than 30 years, a search that is finally coming to the end.

“The Unmarked Graveyard: Stories from Hart Island" is a new series from Radio Diaries that tells the stories of seven people buried on Hart Island through a range of circumstances. Hart Island, an uninhabited strip of land off the Bronx is America's largest public cemetery, sometimes known as a "potter's field." Since 1869, more than a million people have been buried on Hart Island, including early AIDS patients, unidentified and unclaimed New Yorkers, immigrants, incarcerated people, artists, and about ten percent of New Yorkers who died of COVID-19.

On Saturday we dug up stories of people buried at America’s largest public cemetery, Hart Island in NYC, with Radio Diaries executive director Joe Richman. Accompanied by moody and dreamy cello sequences by Lily Gelfand, this event combined so many things we care about at Graveside Variety. Sharing stories, learning about history and culture, contemplating mortality, healing through music, and building compassion. When we heard about Radio Diaries’ newest series The Unmarked Graveyard, it melted our little gothy hearts and we were so thrilled they said yes. Thank you @joekrichman @lilymgelfand and the @radiodiaries team for bringing this special night to Woodstock!

Our first night of graveyard stories at Graveside!! 🤓🪦

On Saturday, 1/20 at 6pm we welcome @radiodiaries and their new series The Unmarked Graveyard: Stories from Hart Island. Join Radio Diaries’ Executive Producer @joekrichman and cellist @lilymgelfand on an audio tour of America’s largest public cemetery and hear some of the stories buried there.

Hart Island is located on an uninhabited strip of land off the Bronx in the Long Island Sound. Since 1869, more than a million people have been buried on Hart Island, including early AIDS patients, unidentified and unclaimed New Yorkers, immigrants, incarcerated people, artists and actors, and, most recently, approximately ten percent of New Yorkers who died of COVID-19.

Many of the people buried on Hart Island are shrouded in anonymity. The island has no headstones or plaques, just numbered markers. In many cases, explanations for how bodies came to be buried there are hard to find.

The event will feature audio clips and a behind the scenes glimpse of the series. The Unmarked Graveyard explores the ways we think about anonymity in death, and how community, class, and mental health shape what happens after we die.

“Sensitively edited and beautifully sound-designed, the series imbues its subjects and its setting with a quiet, respectful poetry: in the words of the composer’s widower, it was “the simplicity, the anonymity, the humility” of Hart Island that appealed to his egalitarian husband.” - Sarah Larson, The New Yorker

As always, tickets are available at gravesidevariety.com
