Had the sincere privilege to enjoy the incredible Love Letter to Chiang Mai popup at Thattu by @pinksaltkitchens, @fnoinaj and @hi.palita. The menu, curated lovingly with a desire to honor family history and memory, showcased the incredible talent and passion of the Thai American chefs! With a desire to share these all in community, we enjoyed family style dishes showcasing Northern Thai cuisine which aren't commonly available at Thai restaurants in the US. Don't mind me, I'm just researching flights- Chiang Mai has always had a special place in my heart and this meal had me feeling all kinds of nostalgic with a warm heart and full belly! Make sure to follow all of the tagged accounts to support all these amazing local Chicago community leaders!

Menu is in the first picture, everything was amazing- I'm especially dreaming about the green chili relish, Sai Oua, Aep Pla, and unpictured but quickly devoured turmeric cookie from @radicaljoybakery .

I want to say so much about this whirlwind of a dinner and collaboration we called Sukeban. I will focus on my biggest learning about community and food.

Coming into community with people around food is just about one of the most intimate things you can do with strangers and friends. I don’t mean going to an award-winning restaurant for culinary tourism. And I don’t mean that cup of noodles you heat up frantically in between breaths because you have 5 minutes to eat and survive.

I specifically mean the act of making food (and art) for people who see you. I mean the act of asking willing folks to exchange their energy for yours. I mean trusting yourself and whoever you’re working with to take the trust and energy of your guests and to translate that into wonder and sustenance and care.

I participated in Sukeban because I recognized the expertise of the people I’d be working with. I surrendered my heart to it because I chanced the opportunity to forge deeper relationships — with both collaborators and guests — in a time where I want so badly for humanity and this industry to break the chains of individualism, “excellence”, escapism, and isolation. I came out of it feeling more aligned with myself and others wanting change than I could have imagined. I am in awe with renewed hope for whatever is to come. We can make it through, together.

Thank you to everyone who was there. Thank you to teammates who showed up raw and honest and ready. Thank you to guests for being absolutely delighted in our team’s efforts; for extending your care to us too.
