🌲Summer Pt1 - PNW Edition🌲

This summer I set the intention to spend more time exploring outdoors. I found amazing swim spots. And got to do a bunch of paddling, singing & playing with good company.

I love this land so much. May we continue to heal and repair all our relations with it 🤍

✨ Join us for a special Shabbat Dinner Fundraiser at Lita Rae Cafe this Friday, Sept 13, 7-10 PM! 🍽️ Celebrate, connect, and support @radfruitspdx & @alshawa.project2024 ✨ let’s gather for a meaningful time making a difference & building community 🌟💞✨ Event link in bio 💓

Rad Fruits PDX is a queer, trans, disabled, and BIPOC land project & collective nurturing healing spaces for our greater web of community, growing food, medicine, and tending the earth ~ while enjoying a delicious meal made with fruit from our trees & vines 🍇🌱💖including homemade grape juice with black currants made with our very own grapes!!! Picked by @raeoflight25 & @ellissimo.photo 💓🍇🌟🥲✨ magical fruit of the vine, ancestor connection 🌱🍇✨ and even further imbued with the sweetness of September sunlight, grapes from @finkaminka’s vines and @realtorannierose beautiful birthday babe! There’s some with elderberries too; soon to be for sale to prepare for the high holidays ✨

The Al Shawna Project is a vetted NY-based aid organization bringing water & needed resources to families in occupied Palestine. Thinking of the olive 🫒 tree groves, tended & passed down over generations. I am thinking of the incredibly moving artwork by @nomyteaches depicting a Pal€stini@n woman hugging an olive tree on fire, the sacred deep connection to land & olives, and the parallel connection we as Jews have to grapes 🍇 Genesis 9:20-23 Noah, a farmer, was the first to plant a vineyard! They are our sacred fruit. How similar an honoring, connection to land, and how heartbreaking & counter to our honoring of the sacred the destruction to land & life 💔 words don’t capture the depth of grief

As we enter the sabbath, we bring in a deeper honoring of life, community, and connection. We give tzedakah, we move through portals, we hold dear the fruit of the vine, the tree, the earth, we have reverence for all life. We hope you join us in this beautiful ritual dinner 💞

Lita Rae’s Marvelous Cafe is officially open for business!!!! 💓💓💓🌸🌸🌸 We had a super sweet opening day gathering on August 5th, in honor of what would have been Nanny Lita’s 93rd birthday 🥳 of course I made her famous cucumber 🥒 salad, an afternoon cup of coffee, and chocolate cake. Lita loooooved her chocolate!!

I set up a sweet ancestor alter, and invited friends to bring something to add to it. Folks brought flowers, and I made a little ancestor plate with a smattering of all her favorite foods in front of a picture of her from her 90th birthday 👑 I felt really connected to her that day, and could feel that she felt celebrated & honored.

In many cultures, it’s important to tell stories and make sure we say our ancestors names; in this way, we keep their memory alive. Naming this passion project after Lita & making her recipes are some of the ways I honor her, but even more so are ways that I continue to family legacy of feeding the people I love. I am continuing the tradition of kitchen witchin’ 🧙🏻 that was modeled by our beloved matriarch, Lita Mae, and working to share the abundance of creativity & family history with my community.

More big news, I was interviewed by the editor of the Jewish Review, and there’s an article in this month’s edition about the cafe opening!!! You can find the link to the virtual paper in our bio 💓🌸🧅
