🇷🇺🛰️ BIG: Russian military satellite closes in on U.S.-registered radar satellite

Russia’s Kosmos 2612 has been maneuvering to within 136 meters of ICEYE-X36, a U.S.-registered radar imaging satellite. Satellite trackers predict a closer pass of about 48 meters on Monday.

WHAT WE KNOW
🔻 Dutch tracker Marco Langbroek says a series of maneuvers since September 30 was designed to match Kosmos 2612’s orbit to ICEYE-X36’s.
🔻 Astronomer Jonathan McDowell called it the first known case of an active satellite making an uninvited close approach to another active satellite in low Earth orbit.
🔻 ICEYE, a Finnish company, has supplied radar imagery to Ukraine since 2022. It is unclear whether this satellite serves Ukraine.
🔻 There are no signs of damage so far, and Russia’s intentions remain unclear.

RAGE INTEL ASSESSMENT
Matching another satellite’s orbit this closely is deliberate. It could be used to inspect the satellite, collect its signals, jam it, or show that Russia can reach it if it wants to. Commercial radar satellites have become a key intelligence source for Ukraine. Targeting one, even only to make a point, signals that Moscow sees private space companies as part of the battlefield. Monday’s pass is the moment to watch.

Is commercial space now a frontline in the Russia–Ukraine war? 👇
