If you have an Aucklander in your life, they probably want to talk about trains. Please indulge them. After 10 years of disruption and delays, the giddy feeling that we finally have a proper rail system, that we’ve completed our adolescent maturation, that we’re finally a real city, has Auckland adults grinning like 8 year olds on their first trip to MOTAT.

While it’s shortened morning commutes across the web of our existing train system, the City Rail Link’s real power comes alive in the evening. It’s no secret that central Auckland businesses had it tough while the link was under construction, but now it couldn’t be easier to immerse yourself in downtown’s delights. Along with the system opening, there’s been a number of new restaurants debuting, expanding or returning to the city. At the link in bio, @george_fenwick hops on the City Rail Link for a culinary crawl of the new openings, soon-to-be-openings and reopenings lighting up Auckland’s dining scene.

It’s been a hot min since a Hungry Birch post, but rest assured, I’ve still been eating good 🤝🏼🍷

First up, a massive shoutout to my new local, @ragtag! I’ve loved this place for ages, so I’m absolutely stoked to now have it as my neighbourhood eating spot.

Combined a couple of visits into one post because there’s been far too much goodness not to share:

🍤 Prawn tostada, tomato vinaigrette
🐟 Torched raw fish tostada, apple salsa, nam jim
🐙 Octopus tostada, chilli jam, fresh herbs
🌮 Duck carnitas tacos, beetroot salsa
🍛 Smoked lamb, korma, mint chutney, duck fat tortillas
🍮 Sticky toffee pudding, toffee sauce, vanilla ice cream

And fuck me, EVERYTHING has been delicious. 🤤 Every dish absolutely slaps, and the sticky toffee pudding is a must.

But beyond the food, the service and staff are exceptional. Even at 9pm on a Monday night, when we’re cackling away over a bottle of wine, the team make you feel so welcome.

Safe to say I’ll be making myself very comfortable here. Lucky me, unlucky bank account. 🤌🏼

ahha has moved!

After a fun filled 3 years at 46 Ponsonby Road, we’ve moved! Not far — just round the corner to 492A Karangahape Road! We spent the weekend shuffling furniture up a narrow stair, screwing desks together and lugging a very heavy piece of hinuera stone into our space too.

We’re so excited to settle in and welcome some friendly faces soon!

New fave restaurant unlocked📍Ragtag, Westmere

@ragtag_nz just bumped its way into my Auckland top 3 restaurants

I genuinely loved every bite, but if I had to recommend just a few dishes then I would order:

Torched raw fish tostada w/apple salsa
Duck carnitas tacos w/beetroot salsa
Smoked lamb w/ mint chutney & 6 duck fat tortillas

Finally made it to Ragtag (a hot fave amongst my friends) and it lived up to the hype!!

We did the $75 set menu which meant you could try 4 “individual bites” and then 4 sharing plates - 8 dishes in total and I great way to experience their menu!

took far too long to get to @ragtag_nz , which had been recommended only by everyone in akl.

highlights were the octopus tostada - sooo smoky and perfectly cooked. one of the best 🐙 dishes i’ve had in akl. the lamb fell off the bone and was great w the duck fat tortilla. still dreaming about the sticky toffee pudding too - would be rude not to finish w this. cohesive flavours across the board, need to come back asap to try more off the menu. well deserving of its hype ⭐️

crisps w hot chicken seasoning and kiwi onion - very moreish start

prawn tostada - v prawn toast-ish

octopus tostada ⭐️⭐️⭐️

beef nugs - jam packed w meat, really liked the green chilli sauce

market fish w zhoug sauce - super meaty, flakey kahawai 🐠

smoked lamb w korma 🐑

sticky toffee pudding - no notes ⭐️

[📍Ragtag, Westmere ] Headed back to one of my favourite restaurants in Auckland 🍦😍

We ordered the sriracha carrots 🥕 ($19), deep fried sprouts 🌱 ($19), duck tacos 🌮 ($28), market fish 🐟 ($37), smoked lamb 🍖 ($42), sweet and sour pumpkin 🎃 ($35), sticky toffee pudding 🍮 ($15), and basque cheesecake 🍰 ($11)

The sriracha carrots were honestly incredible 😍 beautifully balanced and a generous portion. The sprouts were a tad sour but nice and crispy, and the duck tacos were fantastic as always. The PUMPKIN - my God this surprised me. I was sad to see the Aubergine go but the pumpkin was my new favourite. Crispy, sticky, and sweet, I was practically licking the plate by the end 😂 the sticky toffee pudding was another standout - I can see why it’s such a massive hit. Will absolutely be coming back!
