#NewEpisode: As the global landscape evolves, the dynamics of power, trade and diplomacy are increasingly interlinked. Are alliances with other countries essential to US safety, security, and economic success or are we best served by an “America First” approach? Govs. Phil Bredesen and Bill Haslam spoke with @rahmemanuel, former White House Chief of Staff and US Ambassador to Japan, and Michael Kimmage, Professor of History at @catholicuniversity, about the pros and cons of foreign alliances and the new international order.

When asked why he believes the US should maintain a higher level of influence and leadership in the world, Emanuel cautioned that if we don’t, other countries will, saying, “Power vacuums get filled, and I'd rather have a centrifugal force of power around America's interests than around Russia or China who are clearly trying to harm us.”

Kimmage said that while there are negatives of a more pragmatic strategy when dealing with other countries, it may be easier to accomplish certain goals, saying, “The positive of a less values-based approach is that it gives you a lot of flexibility. If you want to conduct diplomacy with Russia about ending the war in Ukraine, you can do so on a very pragmatic footing.” Tap the link in bio to listen to the episode at @utbakerschool.

Thank you, Mayor Rahm Emanuel. You’ve challenged me, introduced me to colleagues that turned into family and made my hometown love grow more than I could’ve imagined. I’ve learned that public service is not an easy job but it is the most fulfilling job I will ever have. The job isn’t an easy one but it’s an experience I would never trade. Gracias @rahmemanuel @chicagosmayor y hasta luego! #onward #chicago
