At the first National ASSURE Dialogue, the shift from building approvals to performance was a central focus of the session ‘Enabling the Transition: Policy, Regulation, and Public Leadership’. The session examined fragmented approval systems, limited access to performance evidence, and the capacity needed to track buildings after occupancy.

Following a presentation by Ritwika Basu, External Consultant, IIHS, a panel moderated by Kavita Wankhade, Head – Governance & Services, IIHS Practice, brought together Guruprakash Sastry, Head – Climate Action, Infosys; Prem P Singh, Chief Town Planner, Government of Haryana; and Vipul Jain, Head – Leasing, Avante Spaces, to discuss how disclosure, incentives, and accountability can support the HPB transition.

Key takeaways from the session included:

→ Energy and water consumption disclosures can establish a transparent basis for assessing performance and identifying improvements.
→ Regulation needs to extend beyond approval and certification to track how buildings perform throughout their operating lives.
→ Incentives should recognise performance beyond minimum compliance; faster approvals are a possible way to reward better outcomes.
→ Common performance expectations need to account for differences in building use and occupancy, supported by digital monitoring and credible verification.

What’s needed next is connecting policy expectations with the systems and people responsible for delivering them.

ASSURE’s 10th masterclass webinar explores a question relevant to anyone who develops or designs buildings: how do buyers respond to High Performance Buildings (HPBs)?

In ‘Providence Park: How HPBs Find a Place in the Market’, Gaurav Vakil will walk participants through the process of bringing the titular project to fruition—from translating building science principles into a real residential project, to navigating construction, cost, buyer expectations, and market acceptance.

A mid-rise, residential building located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad), in Maharashtra, Providence Park shows that high-performance outcomes are achievable regardless of project size, usage, and location.

Architects, engineers, green building consultants, and real estate professionals—this is a session you don’t want to miss.

Back with another edition of bothering @nithinkamath with questions.

While we speak about why we do what we do at @rainmatterin and @rainmatterorg internally very often, felt we should share our thoughts with everyone.

And if you have questions for Nithin, do send them. ♥️

At the inaugural National ASSURE Dialogue 2026, the session ‘High Performance Buildings in India: Evidence, Experience and Opportunity’ opened with a clear message: evidence across building types, locations, and ownership models shows that significant energy and water savings are possible without compromising comfort or raising upfront construction costs.

The challenge now is not technical feasibility, but making high performance widely achievable and commercially attractive.

Following a presentation by Manish Dubey, Chief – Practice, IIHS, a panel moderated by Aalok Deshmukh, Co-Founder and Managing Director, DEFINE, brought together Manisha JV, Strategic Advisor – Commercial Real Estate and Sustainability; Niladri Mishra, Head – Global Infrastructure and Climate Action, Infosys; and Rao Munukutla, CEO, Bengaluru Airport City Ltd to discuss how owners, developers, and occupiers value performance.

Key takeaways from the session are as follows:

→ Measured outcomes and total operating costs give decision-makers a clearer view of returns.
→ Occupiers increasingly expect building performance and employee wellness, which shapes a building’s ability to attract and retain tenants.
→ Certification offers a common language, but trusted verification shows how buildings perform once occupied.
→ Leases can set performance requirements, and define how retrofit costs and benefits are shared.

The next challenge is extending high performance to smaller offices, residential buildings, and markets beyond the largest cities by making building performance visible and relevant to everyday market decisions.

'Our Safety, Our Responsibility - A Step towards Safely Sharing Space with Leopards'

This Wildlife Week, the Junnar Forest Division, along with WCS-India, got up to engaging with over 1,600 students, youth, teachers, and migrant farm labourers across Junnar’s Otur forest range, sharing practical knowledge to help people live safely alongside leopards.

With the continued support of local stakeholders and driven by the Junnar Forest Division, we hope to sustain this effort to help the local authorities effectively manage human-leopard interactions in Junnar.

This initiative is supported by the Rainmatter Foundation and in partnership with The Habitats Trust.

All photographs of minors (under 18 years of age) were taken with the prior consent of the institutional staff.

Anchored by the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), ASSURE convened its first annual National Dialogue on 7 October 2026 in New Delhi, bringing together policymakers, developers, industry leaders, financiers, and researchers to examine what it will take to scale High Performance Buildings (HPBs) in India.

Across the sessions, participants discussed:

→ what India’s early HPBs have demonstrated, what is driving demand, and what continues to limit wider adoption.
→ how regulation, public procurement, and institutional action can support a shift from design-stage compliance to measured performance in use.
→ what lenders and investors need to see before building performance becomes financially relevant.
→ how individual projects can develop into larger, investible pipelines

These conversations also considered a wider challenge: moving from individual examples of high performance to a building and real estate sector where better performance becomes part of mainstream practice.

The Dialogue highlighted the need to connect evidence, policy, and finance more closely, as better performance data can strengthen regulation and reduce investment risk, while clearer policy and financial signals can create the conditions for wider adoption.

The ASSURE National Dialogue endeavours to build a shared understanding across the sector, identify the barriers to scale, and shape a practical pathway for making HPBs more widely adopted in India.

Powering India’s EV Transition: Charging Infrastructure, Interoperability, and the Road to Liveable Cities

India’s electric mobility transition cannot be measured by EV sales alone. The real transformation lies in building the infrastructure, policies, and systems that make electric mobility reliable, accessible, and equitable.

This panel brings together a practitioner’s perspective on what it takes to build a functioning EV ecosystem at the city and state level, drawing on Raahgiri Foundation’s on-ground work with subnational governments.

The discussion will explore:
1. Demand-led charging infrastructure — planning networks around where people actually travel
2. Interoperability : Open standards and the Unified Bharat e-Charge model
3. Public transport integration : Connecting the EV transition with accessible and efficient mobility systems
4. Finance and policy : Leveraging the opportunities available to cities and states under PM E-DRIVE
5. Scrappage and road safety : Ensuring the transition delivers broader public benefits

Join us at the Bangalore Climate Week on October 16, 2026, to co-build electric mobility systems.

#IntheMedia | What does useful weather information look like for a farmer making decisions under uncertainty?

In The Guardian, Neelima Vallangi reports from Odisha on delayed rains, El Niño and the choices farmers are making as they prepare for an uncertain season.

The story visits Laxmipur in Ganjam, where a Gram Vikas weather station records local conditions and a village weather board makes a seven-day forecast available in Odia.

Gram Vikas Executive Director Liby Johnson speaks about the importance of giving farmers the time and confidence to assess this information for themselves: “We have to instil confidence in the community that the information is accurate and valuable, and let the farmer choose what works best for them.”
