Over the weekend I was part of the @aleaaustralia national conference. I live illustrated two panel sessions including one on ‘Equity and Student Voice’ and another on ‘Creating Communities Through Literature’ with Australian Children’s Laureate @andygbooks

What an amazing thing to see so much passion and knowledge about literacy and education in one place! There were many take aways from the conference that I wish all educators and educational policy makers could hear.

For my own part I am a big believer that any school, community or government that wants to improve literacy needs to look hard at what they are doing with literature. Building a stronger and more diverse literary culture in this country is possible but it requires so much more from every level. Parents, schools, government. Kids choosing books to read widely for pleasure is possible.

We’ve always seen ourselves as a “sporty” country and we invest so much at every level in sports. But we can also be a “literary” country and an “creative and innovative” country if we start thinking and investing in those things more too.
