Loved getting to work on Matariki Matarau, a series directed by @tekurudewes for @matahimedia following tauiwi (non-Māori) and their reo Māori journeys. My first time DOPing a whole series and so grateful it was this one, obviously a series right up my alley.

Some of our talent I knew beforehand but some I didn’t, and it was so heartwarming to see just how many people are participating in reo Māori meet-ups and waiata clubs and classes all across the motu, the momentum for change is truly amazing to see, compared to even 10 years ago.

I loved that each of our kaikōrero spoke of not only their love of te reo Māori but how important it was to them as tauiwi to support broader movements for mana motuhake and tino rangatiratanga, that learning the language cannot be divorced from supporting the bigger fight for Māori rights and sovereignty.

E ngākau rorotu ana i te kite i tēnei, i te āpōpōtanga o Aotearoa. This is the future of Aotearoa and I love how it’s becoming more and more normalised.

Ka nui hoki ngā mihi to our crew, esp. to @keeti_melbourne for the behind-the-scenes wrangling, @tuneinwithnat for combing through what I’m sure was way too much footage, and of course to @tekurudewes for pulling off all the producing and directing mahi in just a few months to get it all to air in time for Matariki, tēnā rawa atu koe i tō whakapeto ngoi, i tō tono hoki kia mahi tahi anō tāua 🫶🏼

All eps of Matariki Matarau are out now on MĀORI+ 🧡

Tēnā kotou i tae mai ki te whakarewatanga o Matariki Matarau ✨ The first ep is now live and you can find the link in our bio. It’s been a wild 3 months to turn this documentary series around and deliver in time for Matariki. Grateful to everyone who worked on this kaupapa and who came to support. When deciding to go ahead with the launch, one of the reasons was to give us something to connect around and share hope, like the many Matariki events around the country. This series canvasses the diverse stories of seven Tangata Tiriti, who are united in their pursuit of Te Reo. At a time of heightened division, unity through culture is the way forward. In Aotearoa, on this whenua Māori, Te Reo Māori is the gateway to understanding. Mātaki mai.
