⚕️ As a Physical Therapist, I have a lot of conversations centered around helping people modify activities they enjoy while they’re healing from an injury or getting out of pain. Sometimes it’s as simple as substituting running for biking while we let a stress fracture heal. Other times it’s much more technical like changing specific exercises, positions, or setups in the gym. 🏋️‍♂️ It’s always special to return people to an activity that has been “on the shelf” for a while. Push ups are full of nuance, and lots of people butcher them - so as we progress back into push ups we're taking the time to refine movement quality and intention with each session. Aiming to get a little better at movement execution each time. 👀 Two Common Mistakes people make with push ups often contribute to cranky shoulders. 📐 1) Allowing the elbows to flare out too wide, making a 90° angle with their torso or a "T" shape with their body. Instead, think about keeping the elbows at a 45° angle or making an upwards arrow shape with your body. 💪 2) Allowing the shoulders to "dump" forward and tip downward in the bottom of the push up. Instead, think about moving your body like a lever (or a straight board) rotating around your elbow and shoulder - while keeping tension from your shoulders to your feet. 🙌 @ramonerb has been patient with all the gym modifications and is now getting back into pressing movements like push ups which is a nice reward for working diligently! Cheers to that! 💥 Got pain with lifting, running, or sports? I'd love to help you modify your activities while getting you better - feel free to reach out! #PTswholift #sportsmedicine #sports #sportsinjury #trainsmarter #strength #longevity #birminghamalabama #armday #core #workoutmotivation #physicaltherapy #shoulderpain #gymmotivation #gymlife #fitlife #justdoit #athlete #fitness #motivation #running #run #bodybuilding #pushups #strengthtraining #lifting #functionaltraining #functionalfitness #trainingday #coreworkout
