The AfD has scored a historic election victory in Saxony-Anhalt this week. Is this a German outlier, or a sign of a broader advance of the radical right across Europe? Sweden votes this coming Sunday, while France and Italy are among the countries heading to the polls next year.
The result has also pushed AfD leader Alice Weidel firmly back into the international spotlight. Avant Garde journalist Kemal Rijken recently spoke to her at length for our Spring/Summer issue, which is on sale now.
Weidel speaks openly about migration, remigration, the euro, nuclear power, Russian gas and the influence of Brussels. She expects Germany’s political ‘firewall’ around her party eventually to collapse, allowing the AfD to enter government. After this week’s result, that ambition suddenly sounds considerably less theoretical.
