Athena’s 2nd Birthday Bash was a dream come true! 💖✨🌈

She had the absolute best time with so many of her favorite things: bright colors, sparkles, bubbles, cake, music, playing, and most importantly, being surrounded by so many people who love her.

Thank you so much to everyone who came to celebrate our girl and to everyone who helped bring this party to life. We felt so loved, and I will never forget how many people jumped in to help make it magical.

Athena, in case you read this someday:

Being your mom is the greatest honor of my life! You are truly my greatest gift, and @iamaskyking and I feel so lucky that we get to spend our days loving you, laughing with you, watching you learn, and discovering more of who you are. My dad is not gone

He’s in my love of dancing
He’s in my stubbornness when people want me to do something their way instead of mine
He’s in my brothers wild incredible ideas that will change the world
He’s in my desire to sit and read a book in the middle of a party
He’s in my brothers face
He’s in my nieces mischievousness
He’s in my moms unconditional love for her family
He’s in my obsession of the ocean
He’s in my families fierce desire for equality
He’s in my lack of fear of wildlife that scare the shit out of people
He’s in the tennis world every time a woman is able to live off being a pro athlete
He’s in my brother and me crying while watching a movie or reading a book
He’s in my families love of adventure in the real world and in books

I know my dad is everywhere I look and he’s raised me to be just like him but what I can’t accept is

He won’t be on the phone when my car breaks down
He’s not going to stash chocolate donuts in the downstairs fridge so my mom doesn’t see them
He won’t leave me anymore voicemails starting with “It’s Daddio and it’s this time here”
He won’t tell me he loves me
He won’t sing John Denver off key in the car with me
He won’t text me won’t send me valentines
He won’t drive me crazy stacking dishes poised to fall
He won’t look at my mom like she’s the most amazing beautiful person in the world after 35 years of marriage
He won’t bring home food from Grocery Outlet that has no business being made
He won’t be there to stay calm while I rage
He won’t insist we bring the dogs when there is absolutely no room for them in the car
He won’t be on the other side of the phone no matter where I am in the world he’s always been just a call away
He won’t dance with me at my wedding
He won’t drive hundreds of miles to me just because I need him

Happy Halloween from Athena & Zeus!

I released a podcast with @randomactsofcaroline last week. We went over the first year with Athena 🚀♥️.

We also talked about our NICU experience which low-key sucked. It felt gross using any of that as promo material for our episode.

I did want to share what it felt like for me in a way that felt sincere. Processing out loud.

Here ya go 👇

“Everything is okay. Everything is okay.”

Something in Caroline’s tone makes me jolt out of bed, phone in hand. (I went home to get a few hours of sleep. The “bed” for the father was maybe 5 feet long)

“What’s going on?” I say.

“They are taking her to the NICU”

These words shattered my conception of normalcy. I have thousands of questions and the only answer we have is that this is happening.

12 hours before. Athena Litany King joined us in this world.

The lead up to her birth was an experience that highlighted the issues of our disinterested and unmotivated bureaucratic hospital system. And immediately following her birth it didn’t get better, but that story is better told from Caroline’s perspective.

TL;DL: Athena was projected to be quite a massive baby. The Dr’s recommended a planned C-section because they were worried for the Athena’s safety. They scheduled it before her due date because that allegedly suited their schedule.

Having Athena with us was the world, we were over the moon. Unfortunately, when we were finally able to sit as a family in our hospital room, we got some horrible news.

Even though she was within the acceptable birth window, Athena was still cooking.

Her pancreas was overproducing insulin, and she struggled to maintain normal glucose levels.

After 12 hours of careful monitoring, breastfeeding attempts, and glucose gels, she was taken to from us and brought to the NICU, connected to numerous wires, and exposed only to the dull digital glow of the monitors that tracked her survival.

The nurses couldn’t tell us anything—it might have been a legal issue, though it was hard to tell.

Sometimes they offered hopeful comments, like, “You should be out of here within two weeks.”

Today marks a whole year of Athena! I’m so proud of her in every thing she does. I’m absolutely amazed by @iamaskyking and @randomactsofcaroline for bringing this perfect little one into the world and sharing this world with her in such an inspired way! Athena is so lucky to grow up with you guys as parents! #auntielife
