I have something very special for you today - a sparkling wine made from Viognier. Organic and biodynamically farmed grapes, grown on northeast facing slopes have been hand-harvested to craft this tipple and the bubbles have been created using the méthod Champenoise. Following this, the transfer method has been used for disgorgement.
The transfer method involves placing all the, already sparkling, wine into pressurised tanks. Spent lees are filtered out under constant pressure, which is more cost effect than individual ridding and disgorgement, before the wine is moved into final bottles. No liqueur d’expédition was added to this expression so our sparkling Viognier is also Brut Nature.

Rising through the medium lemon hue, the delicate bubbles create a fine mousse that delivers a bouquet of soft florals and white fruit. Orange blossom and lavender, lemon and bergamot - the medium (+) intensity nose is both flowery and bright. The palate experience is creamy yet lively and nimble from high acidity, low alcohol and medium (-) body. Green and yellow apple, pear, plus white peach and currant are delivered with elegance - the fizz and acidity bring a restrained energy to the more subtle stone fruit. Depth is evident in the toasted brioche that underpins the most developed of aromas - underripe pineapple and guava. I’d love to taste this again in 4-5 years as the medium (+) flavour intensity is ample enough to allow for some cellaring. The medium (+) finish ends on lemon peel and peach skin.

This is Viognier, but not as you know it. Still heady and floral but lighter, brighter and leaner than any expression I’ve ever had. The only thing missing is the rest of the case for my cellar.

🍷 Inzuzo

🗣️ “Born among the vineyards of South Africa’s Western Cape, this Malbec is a celebration of what can happen when wine, opportunity, and community come together. Inzuzo, meaning “reward” or “benefit” in Zulu, is majority-owned by the people who work the vineyards and cellar, with profits supporting projects in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village. Concentrated red berries and dark, sun-ripened plum meet rich dark chocolate, lifted by a bright freshness that gives every sip a sense of generosity.”

🗓️ 2024

📍 The Inzuzo Wine Company, Western Cape, South Africa

🍇 Malbec (13% ABV)

📝 Presenting a rich, ruby-crimson hue in the glass with vibrant purple flashes along the rim. On the nose, it opens with a highly expressive and concentrated bouquet, showcasing upfront aromas of sweet, sun-ripened red plum, wild raspberries, and crushed redcurrants. These bright fruit notes are elegantly layered with subtle hints of warming spice and a faint earthy depth. On the palate, the wine is beautifully medium to full bodied and fluid, with a plush core of juicy red berries and succulent dark fruits. Complex undertones of smooth dark chocolate and fine baking cocoa emerge. Remarkably balanced and approachable, it boasts a finely textured, velvet-like tannin structure that integrates effortlessly with a fresh, lively acidity. The finish is remarkably clean, supple, and long, leaving a satisfying, juicy echo of red plums and soft cocoa that lingers pleasantly on the tongue. It pairs wonderfully with slow-roasted pork belly, flame-grilled beef burgers, rich tomato-based pasta dishes, or a rustic platter of cured meats and hard cheeses.
