It means being curious. Reading old books. Wrestling with unfamiliar ideas. Learning from people who lived before us. Being willing to discover that something you believed might be wrong.

The trail is one way we explore.

Books are another.

The trails we hike today often carry legends from yesterday alongside them.

In 1889, Washington’s governor Elisha Ferry issued a public challenge, calling for hardy citizens to unveil the mysteries of the Olympic Mountains and prove what they were truly made of. The Seattle Press answered by sponsoring six men, led by James Christie, on a daring crossing of the unknown range.

They stepped into one of the harshest winters on record. They fought a leaky homemade boat through freezing rivers, watched their dogs devour their bacon, and survived on thin flour soup. Pushed to the edge at Low Divide,right above the Quinault Valley, they killed three bears and drank the hot grease straight from the pan to keep going. Six grueling months later they emerged, exhausted but alive, in the shadow of what would soon be named Colonel Bob Mountain. Their trek through the uncharted wilderness paved the way for the local hikers who arrived just three years later.

A local party gave the striking peak its name after Civil War colonel and orator Robert Green Ingersoll. The name stuck to the wilderness and the steep trail that winds through ancient rainforest to the 4,492-foot summit.

I’m humbled and grateful to have worked with my dear friends @shunsuke_anai & @rina_anai for @kissa_takenokuma again, this time illustrating the summer season. This design is meant to capture the peaceful feeling of sitting on the engawa, resting in the natural beauty of Takenokuma.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that my favorite place to visit is Takenokuma in Minamioguni. And I wouldn’t be speaking lightly when I say that Shunsuke & Rina and those I’ve met in this part of Japan have become some of the most important people to me.

This series is one of the most meaningful projects I have worked on and I’m deeply grateful to @ransomltd & @parkerfitzhenry for being the connection to such precious friendships.
