MIND HEAD ISSUE 4 We talked with @blankclothingtm founders @dannyyoungtattoo & @raphrashid on BLANK’s 30th birthday. We covered heaps of ground, but mainly stayed in the field of graphics and production. Getting it done at dawn of the digital age. The feature is 20 pages long - 5,000 words, 70 classic graphics extracted and remastered from the archives, A4 full colour, made in OZ… Being resourceful is definitely important when it comes to making things happen. But I reckon being motivated, driven and dedicated is imperative. Raph and Danny certainly tick all those boxes. Over the years, some of the world’s most heavy hitters have lent their style to the BLANK name. Free matcha donuts? I couldn’t say no. 🍵🍩 We stumbled on Yuzu Matcha donuts at Box Hill Central over the weekend and it was so worth it! The donut was incredibly soft, fluffy, and the combination of yuzu with creamy matcha was so good. They also had a spin-the-wheel where everyone had a chance to win a prize, and I walked away with a voucher. 🎉 The line moved pretty quickly, and it was such a fun little pop-up to stumble across. Raph Rashid and I last spoke in 2020 when he was making Mean Cuisine and finding clever ways to keep people entertained at home. This time, he’s in the middle of something just as playful, but much more public: The Greatest of the Mall, a winter school holiday project with Melbourne Food & Wine Festival that sends him into shopping centres across Melbourne to create free, centre-inspired doughnuts. There was a milk tea brûlée doughnut at The Glen, pink lamingtons in Frankston, baklava cheesecake at Broadmeadows and matcha yuzu at Box Hill. But the real joy of this conversation is hearing how Raph thinks about shopping centres, food courts, local flavour and those small, sweet moments with family and friends that become much bigger memories than you expect.
