John George and Bill Ford, photo by Mel Stoutsenberger. This shot is from one of THE most important early BMX photo archives in existence. Mel was there in the beginning and had an INCREDIBLE eye and the photography skills to match… when he took these shots, he was just a kid too! He was simply out there taking photos of he and his friends, compiling a collection of what turned out to be world class documentation of not just the genesis of BMX but 70’s California culture in general.

Another incredible Mel Stoutsenberger photo. The rider is Wayne Catalde. Circa 1974. Check my post right before this one, for more insight on this incredible photographic archive. This shot is my favorite. Mel gave me a print at the BMX Society show in 2014. A treasured piece of BMX history in my collection.

Another issue of a 1975 Southern California Motocross Newspaper, dated April 23rd. This is a good example of when the publisher, Ted Keep, dictated what subject he wanted in my N. Doe cartoon. I’d have to devise a plot line about his agenda, yet it still keep it entertaining and amusing. The cover photo of Steve’s Bultaco rider Rick Deidrick is by @seheidbrink .I also liked the little mailing label on the cover from the shop I used to work at and was my sponsor - City Cycle Center. The interview is with David Taylor. There’s a feature on beers leathers which coincidentally was my very first pair of motocross pants, other than Levi’s. Some of the other racer photos are Jeff Vidic, Bill Rubly, Jeff Jennings, mac52j , and Paul “the Bazzer” Boudreau. This was before I met Paul and we became partners in crime at @motocrossactionmag. The BMX page features photos by @rappensuncle. He was not only a photographer, but a really good BMX racer as well. This week’s post is a little brief because I’m busy doing nothing down in Baja. #southerncaliforniamotocrossnewspaper #4t #scm #mx #promotocross #motocross #betterthancyclenews #supercrosscartoon #dirtbike #dirtbikeart #dirtbikecartoon #motorcycle #motorcycleart #motorcyclecartoon #curtevanscartoons #motocrosshistory #socalmotocross #downupdesign #scmnewspaper #ndoeracingteam #motocrosshistory #motojournalist #bmxhistory #bmxhistorywednesday #downupdesignmerch #saddleback_park #indiandunes #curtswork #cmcmotocross #citycyclecenter

Another fun, old issue of Southern California Motocross Newspaper from 50 years ago. Check out the little mailing label with Whittier Honda, our local shop. The interview is with Jeff Black, who had just won the AME 125 series title. Buzz Baty has a couple of rad photos of Rex Staten and Tim Lunde. Mark Keil covered the NBA State BMX championships, and some of those photos have become so iconic, including one of @rappensuncle . Before he was the Hurricane, he was Bob Hannah, and before he was Bob Hannah he was Robert Hannah riding a Husqvarna. He’s mentioned in the story, but there’s no photo. There are some cool photos of Johanna Stenerson, Mark Cook, Danny LaPorte, Doug Sherman, Scott Gilman, and a DG rider (who might be Gary Denton?). Check out the cool Super Bowl of Motocross van that announcer Dan Skahill was cruising all around town in to promote the big race. There’s an ad for the high school motocross qualifiers for the Superbowl. Some big Pro purses were on the line at Indian Dunes with AME. The back cover has some of the shops in my old hood – Whittier and La Habra. #southerncaliforniamotocrossnewspaper #4t #scm #mx #promotocross #motocross #betterthancyclenews #supercrosscartoon #dirtbike #dirtbikeart #dirtbikecartoon #motorcycle #motorcycleart #motorcyclecartoon #curtevanscartoons #motocrosshistory #socalmotocross #downupdesign #scmnewspaper #ndoeracingteam #motocrosshistory #motojournalist #bmxhistory #bmxhistorywednesday #downupdesignmerch #saddleback_park #indiandunes #50yearcelebration #curtswork #cmcmotocross #dgracing

Two beautiful Cook Brothers slant stems from the @boneshakermtb @gremlinsbicycleemporium vintage mtb show. It’s common knowledge that the Cook Brothers slant stem was the third greatest BMX (and later mountain bike stem) after the original Redline double clamp stem and the Suntour-made Redline Super Proline stem. (Now I’m just being a dick. 😜)
The latter stem (often referred to as The Brute stem) is pictured. This was the nicest original example of one I’ve owned besides the one that came on my 1980 Redline MXII on Xmas 1980.
Pictured is my all original condition replica build of that bike.

I got a legit buzz off this Ritchey.
Plenty of unreal bikes at the @boneshakermtb @gremlinsbicycleemporium vintage mtb show. But if I had to choose one, this is it.
Shout out to my late ‘70s/early ‘80s BMX roots: Nice to see some gold ano Araya 7x hoops, Cook Brothers cranks.

The show closes today.
If you like geeking over beautiful bicycles and parts (and if you don’t, you should), catch this show before it closes.

Sad to hear about the passing of BMX legend Harry Leary. Back when I was a kid riding & racing BMX in Massachusetts, Harry Leary was a hero.
Got to meet him for a few minutes at a @bmxsociety show about 12 years ago. He was super gracious and generous with his time. I was starstruck.
RIP, Harry
