Things on my mind: What good is the martial/Montu sciences if they aren’t applicable to life outside of combat. It’s not just physical but mental, and spiritual. It’s revolutionary. We talk about the revolution often but what about the revolution within? Isn’t healing and growth while black revolutionary? Lemme know your thoughts.

As June comes to a close, we share this teaser of an oral history project in the spirit of Juneteenth and Black liberation! This audiovisual documentation records the lives of four Black farmers native to New Haven-- Jonathon Savage of Ferry St. Farm, Doreen Abubakar of Urbanscapes and Community Placemaking Engagement Network, Dishaun Harris (Farmer D) of RootLife, and Malik Williams of Yale West Campus Farms— recorded and conducted by Nailah Garard. In our conversations we discussed environmental connection, foodways, and inheritances of agriculture skills and love of land. This series of interviews are designed to preserve the legacies and stories of agricultural trailblazers and food organizers whose stories embody an intimate ecological knowledge and deep community care, repairing misrepresentations of Black natives in New Haven. This project also demonstrates Nailah’s relationships with these farmers who were instrumental to her connection to place and community as a graduate student living in New Haven. Stay tuned for more!
