When Speech wrote “Tennessee,” he wasn’t simply creating a hit record—he was processing grief, searching for meaning, and trying to find his way forward after the deaths of two family members.

In this powerful moment from our conversation with Arrested Development, Speech reveals the deeply personal story behind one of the most important songs of the 1990s.

Sometimes the songs that move the world begin in the moments that nearly break us.

**Juneteenth is June 19.**

It marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally informed of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth is a celebration of liberation, resilience, freedom culture, and the enduring contributions of Black people to American history. It’s a day to honor our ancestors, reflect on the ways that we have overcame even if we did a little later than we hoped, and then celebrate the power of community, creativity, and progress.

In that same spirit of cultural pride and legacy, **Arrested Development**— our group has long stood at the intersection of music, consciousness, and culture—will be bringing unforgettable energy to the stage. We be blending hip-hop with soul, spirituality, and social awareness, always creating music rooted in heritage and upliftment.

We’re performing **in Hapeville, Georgia**, (for FREE - June 19th) continuing our Legacy In Motion tour including storytelling and celebration through sound. Then on **Saturday in South Carolina**, home of the incredible **Geechee Gullah people**—a community with deep historic significance, rich traditions, and a powerful cultural legacy that continues to shape the fabric of American history.

This Juneteenth weekend, don’t just commemorate—**experience it live.**
Come celebrate freedom, culture, and music with us. For info: ADtheBand.com
Come feel the history.
Come be part of the movement.

Today marks **32 years** since the release of *Zingalamaduni* by Arrested Development 🎶✨

A groundbreaking album that wasn’t afraid to challenge the system and expand the conversation. From speaking on socialism and the billionaire families pulling strings behind the scenes, to uplifting spirituality, Pan‑Africanism, Diverse Artistry, Elders and honoring movements and leaders like MOVE (Philly) & Kwame Nkrumah — this project pushed boundaries and sparked minds.

It wasn’t just music. It was education. It was resistance. It was culture.

Three decades later, the message still resonates. 📖🔥

Two Grammys. 1992. 🏆🏆
Best Rap Single – *“Tennessee”*
Best New Artist.

No blueprint. No permission. Just vision.

We blended melody with bars before it had a name.
We spoke on loss, pain, and real life when vulnerability wasn’t “cool.”
We stood together—women and men—in one rap group.
And we carried Atlanta on our backs before the spotlight ever hit the city.

The Grammys may not hold the same weight today…
but in that era? It was everything.
And we changed the game doing it our way. 🔥 #arresteddevelopment #hiphop #tennessee #lifemusic

Seeing Smoove experience Arrested Development for the first time is a beautiful reminder: our music was always deeper - spiritual, lyrical, intentional - even from the first single. True expression goes beyond trends. It reaches the soul. Art (even popular music) must be allowed to go deeper than booty shaking, pills & gang banging. Shout out to @jjboogie for finding this one. ADtheBand.com for all our gems and tour dates! #lifeMusic
