It was fun playing on #vinyl at @orbitbeers last night! I also really enjoyed the improvised #record digging with @cellar_man from an interesting @ratrecords‘ mixed genre big pile, some good tunes came out!

NEWSFLASH⚡️ My pal Philippe is opening a new record shop in Deptford called @upsidedownrecords It’s going to be special, this is his calling ✨Philippe used to manage the legendary ‘Rat Records’ in Camberwell London SE5, where I lived for 17 years. I loved that place and would have been gutted if it had closed while I was still living there. The owner Tom, who inconceivably lived in Scotland retired the shop at the height of it’s popularity, so now that life force and community hub shall live on. Rat records was a magical mecca, I proudly compassed the shop just off Camberwell Green as a homing beacon to my flat right around the corner, simply go past Rat then left at the bus garage ✅ I used to love the Sat morning crowd gathering outside for the ritual unleashing of new arrival vinyl. I’d pass this familiar mob while getting my eggs & milk. Saying hello to half deaf Gaz would always be met with an assertive “Tom your number 14” - I’m Not queuing Gary, just saying hello, I’m on the breakfast run 🙃 Rat would have weekend guest Live sessions and in 2011 Philippe asked me if I’d like to come and play a slot. My approach to DJing is purely spur of the moment, with this invitation I decided to run with tunes (or the majority of) that I had bought in the shop. So I share this rediscovered Mix as a bold example of sounds ‘Upside-down records’ might well be stocking in the near future. There’s no space here for a track listing but some of these fine acquisitions include The Staple Singers, GALLON DRUNK, Adriano Celentano, EASYBEATS, The Caper Brothers & DR ALIMANTADO. I confess this session should have ended right after the 11 minute finale of ’Sookie Sookie’ by Grant Green, but I had to unprofessionally dash off somewhere so I asked Philippe to end the recording after this track faded out 💦 Hi Ho. The rest is pretty considered. Back to the shop, Links are below > I’ll see you there….

Page 122. @ratrecords “... the shop quickly amassed a devoted following, with crate diggers queuing down the road each Saturday morning to be the first to get their hands on the week’s new drops. After selling over 1 million second-hand records, driving 860,000 miles, wearing out 17 vehicles and sourcing the only known recording of a collaboration between Mick Jagger and John Lennon...” @ro_hew #londonshopfronts #joelholland_studio
