I brought my very best running themed chat up lines to test at the BOWUM this weekend.

Words like awful and awkward there thrown around, but what do you think?

How did they miss my rizz? 😂

In isolation, this picture seems fairly innocuous. However, this image from 2019 represents a significant turning point in my life.

I’d recently been made redundant, was seriously struggling with my mental health, requiring regular help and medication. I had gone to the Welsh mountains for a hike in an attempt to find myself again (as cliche as that sounds). During this hike, the weather closed in rapidly, reducing visibility to almost nothing, heavy rain meant I was drenched, battered by the winds, I fell and tore the ligaments in my ankle and ended up, sitting for a spell and just crying, feeling utterly broken.

Something clicked in my head during this and gave me the awareness if I didn’t start moving soon, I would be far worse than a shivering mess.
I limped, hopped and at times slid on my arse over nearly 2.5 hours to get to my car, where I sat and cried again! Eventually, I dried, changed and got some food and drink and decided there and then I had two choices;

1 - Continue down the spiral I was going, reflect on only the negatives and hope that things might change around me, convinced they wouldn’t.

2 - Remind myself of what I had, what I’ve achieved so far, try and believe in myself, then begin to challenge myself to see what I was capable of.

Since then, I’ve run my first and 42 more marathons, including on a 3m balcony, carrying weight and 10 in 10 days in 10 counties, meeting many truly incredible people from the running community on the way. I’ve raised nearly £50,000 for charity and given over a 1,000 hours of volunteer time. I’ve broken a 12 hour Burpees Guinness World record with some awesome friends, ran 5 ultras including the 156miles across the Outer Hebrides. I’ve climbed the height of Everest on my stairs in 4 days, spoken to thousands of people on stages about mental health, with some humbling and moving results.

I say this now to share, to remind myself of my journey and in the hope that it also reminds us all that we all have setbacks and challenges in life, but we can also do so much to write our own future too.
