September asked a lot of me and gave so much in return. 💫

A month full of creativity, learning, celebrating, working hard, and playing hard with the people I love in the places that inspire me.

Feeling deeply grateful for it all. 💞

we took the 3rd, 4th, & 5th graders on a mini art field trip to @ballroommarfa ! we saw the @ravenhalfmoon show before it closed last week. this show is incredible + the kids loved it! absolutely go see it if you ever get the chance to.

@ballroommarfa supplied clay and a totem project for the kiddos too. they’re still working them out but so far so cute! 🤍

Issue 23 Slay the Clay! RAVEN HALFMOON ( @ravenhalfmoon ). Halfmoon has produced dozens of large-scale figurative ceramic works in recent years, many of which now sit in museums, sometimes beside ancient ceramic works produced by the Caddo, the tribe Halfmoon is part of and whose histories and iconographies are intrinsic to all of the work she produces. Her work depicts women, as well as animals like horses and dogs that are central to Halfmoon’s life. Caddo culture is matrilineal, and that lineage of powerful women runs through the work. “We’re Caddo, Lenape/Delaware, and Choctaw on my mother’s side, and then on my dad’s side I’m Otoe-Missouria,” she explains. “But on both sides of the family the women are very strong power figures within the family. My mom was a strong power figure. My grammy was, my aunt is, I feel like I am. So, all my figures tend to be women because that’s my experience. When I get to visit my pieces in museums or in someone’s private collection, it truly is like seeing like my grammy again and I’m taken right back to how I was feeling when I made them, and who helped me when I made them. It feels like family.” Go deeper in issue 23, link in bio.

from the ground, for Raven Halfmoon
.
Recently got to visit Raven’s solo exhibition “Flags of Our Mothers” at Ballroom Marfa and was happily surprised to see a stack of copies of Raven’s monograph (published by Ross Kramer Gallery) in the Ballroom Marfa shop.

I had the honor of writing an essay about Raven’s work for this monograph back in 2020, and that writing eventually became the foundation for the curatorial, affective, and communal framework of “tierra,” the Clay Biennial currently on view at Craft Contemporary. Super proud of this essay, and incredibly grateful to Raven for the honor and trust in me to write about her work.
