I’m honored to be participating in The Assembly program for the closing of In Minor Keys, the 61st Venice Biennale.

The Assembly serves as a space to share ideas and creative practices, and to reflect on pedagogy, knowledge transmission, research, and the tending of land, body and community. The participating organizations come from capital cities, provincial centers and rural communities, and operate with vastly different goals, organizational structure, methods and sustainability models. Yet what binds them together is the role they’ve come to play for artists and cultural practitioners: places to connect, learn, and trade ideas, evolving alongside the changing art system while cultivating practices rooted in the ethos of listening, sharing and conviviality.

Koyo Kouoh established RAW Material Company in Dakar in this spirit, as a space for collaboration, learning and exchange. For In Minor Keys, Koyo invited six such groups as participants in the Exhibition: Denniston Hill (Catskills); RAW Material Company (Dakar); GAS Foundation (Lagos/Ikiṣẹ); lugar a dudas (Cali); blaxTARLINES (Kumasi) and Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute - NCAI (Nairobi). Four further groups join these in the Assembly: Dar Jacir (Bethlehem); Fresh Milk (Barbados); Picha Collective (Lubumbashi); and Gudskul (Jakarta).

I will be moderating a conversation entitled Seeding Resilience on Friday November 13 at 11am CET with Emily Jacir (Dar Jacir, Bethlehem), Megan Steinman (Denniston Hill, Catskills) and Haja Fanta (RAW Material Company, Dakar).

This panel begins with the simple act of sowing seeds. What grows in the intention of planting and in tending the seedling’s growth? Across the world, artists, curators, writers, critics and educators have acted on the necessity to establish spaces that offer artists and cultural practitioners time and resources to convene, collaborate, slow down or simply rest. These are also ‘seeds’: ideas that are planted and propagated. Each of the organisations discuss a ‘seed’ project, followed by an open discussion across context, geography, demand and desire.

UBBI YOON ☀️KOYO KOUOH ☀️

Une pensée libre. Des imaginaires en mouvement. Un héritage vivant.

Commissaire d’exposition, penseuse et figure majeure de l’art contemporain africain, Koyo Kouoh (1967–2025) a consacré son parcours à créer des espaces où les artistes, les idées et les récits trop souvent marginalisés peuvent prendre toute leur place.

Fondatrice et directrice artistique de RAW Material Company @raw.gram2011 à Dakar, elle a imaginé un lieu de rencontre entre art, savoirs et société. Son travail a contribué à déplacer les regards, à faire dialoguer les géographies et à repenser la place de l’Afrique dans les récits de l’art contemporain.

En 2024, elle est nommée directrice artistique de la 61e Exposition internationale d’art de la Biennale de Venise. Son dernier grand projet curatorial, « In Minor Keys » a été conçu avant sa disparition, en mai 2025, puis réalisé par son équipe en 2026, dans le respect de sa vision.

Pensée comme une invitation à ralentir, à écouter et à retrouver les voix discrètes, les liens sensibles et les imaginaires qui nourrissent nos mondes, cette exposition défend une autre manière de faire art : plus attentive aux relations humaines, aux savoirs situés, aux gestes du quotidien et aux possibles collectifs.

Koyo Kouoh nous laisse une conviction essentielle : il existe d’autres façons de raconter le monde, de faire communauté et d’imaginer l’avenir. Encore faut-il créer les espaces pour les entendre et les faire grandir.

Some summer with friends family. Andrea De Siena dancing the pizzica with style at Cantiere in Ostuni. Thank you Aldo, Flore, Alice, Federica, Michela and everyone who made this the most moving exhibition and to see Jonathan and Athena 😍

Apparently my mother lies under this tombstone. I miss her terribly sometimes. Mostly it’s a relief. Her centrifugal force was too strong for me as magnetic as it made her for so many others.

Some weeks in Dakar restored my faith in humanity. Fortress Europe is a prison. May horizons blossom and borders vanish. The book that reconnected me to my ancestors. Some of whom were radical anti-capitalist, anti-nation state feminists. I had almost lost hope in any grains of wisdom to draw on. Thank you Anna. Truly.

Koyo if you meet any of those anarchist Yiddish poets give them a hug. It was good to sit in the beautiful space you created in Dakar. You must’ve been someone special. Rest well knowing it’s in very good hands.

Check the carving on the marble bench placed by some young Germans loving but apparently dyslexic family. May she PIR.

I was in the elevator with Mo Zediah and my son Marlowe when I asked if it was floor six or seven. After Zediah and I simultaneously said “sixsevennnn” Marlowe looked at us in horror and said “lucky there are no adults in here”.

AlBadawi is a 4,500 year old olive tree. Thank you Spore for your solidarity and courage over these years. You’ve been an island of tender humanity in this time of monsters.

Found these contacts of Amy Whinehouse in our archive. There’s a lot of ghosts in them boxes.

Moharram, to have survived a genocide that is still going on and still radiate such love and generosity. Honestly, you have all taught us life. I am so grateful.

Recap from Basel -to receive the inaugural Art Basel-Koyo Kouoh fellowship. I am thankful for the multiplicity of generosities and kindnesses that have made it possible for me to embark on this journey, thankful to my family and friends, thankful to the amazing @artbasel team. And I am doubly thankful to my @raw.gram2011 family, my sisters, my Amazons. The news of this award, came at the most provident time, and it buoyed me. Honoured to walk an ancestral journey as laid out by the great Koyo Kouoh, my hero, who has shown us that where there is hope, there is possibility and therefore there is work to be done. Honoured to do this work alongside my extraordinary colleagues, my teachers, my peers, my sisters, my elders- in Abuja, Abidjan, Kaduna, Dakar, Paris, Florianopolis, Jos, Barcelona, Liverpool, Lagos, Accra, Marrakech, Badagry, Uyo, Houston, Kano, Saint Louis, Benin, Kumasi, Bangalore, Beirut, NYC, Yaounde, Berlin, Valencia, Abu Dhabi, Kano, Niamey, Yola, everywhere, and now Basel. It is no joke that if we want to go far, we must go together. As for my experience in Basel, it can only be experienced and words fail me at this point- all I can say is “Only One Basel” for real! We cordially invite you to the symposium „Relationalities: Conditions of Interdependence,“ jointly organized by Städelschule and Portikus.

The symposium will take place on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 6–7:30 pm, and Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 1–8:30 pm, at the Aula, Städelschule, Dürerstraße 10, 60596 Frankfurt am Main.

Participation is free of charge and no registration is required. Seating is limited.

„Relationalities: Conditions of Interdependence“ examines how artistic and curatorial practices across diverse geographical and political contexts develop collaborative strategies and methodologies in response to contemporary social, economic, and political conditions. The symposium asks, how do artists, curators, and cultural workers engage with, reshape, or create the infrastructures that enable collective initiatives? How are existing institutions reconfigured, and what forms of para-institutional networks, solidarities, and systems of material and immaterial exchange emerge through contemporary artistic practice today?

Presentations and discussions will bring together speakers and interlocutors including Amal Ahaag (Metro54), Karen Archey, Zasha Colah, Niloufar Emamifar, Haja Fanta (RAW Material Company), Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh (blaxTARLINES), Sarah Pierce (The Metropolitan Complex), Hamza Walker, and Mi You.

🏛️ With "In Minor Keys," Koyo Kouoh has subverted the curatorial rules of the Venice Biennale.

Building on the legacy of Adriano Pedrosa’s 2024 edition, which centered diasporic subjectivities, Kouoh shifts our gaze from the politics of identity to a "grammar of material and ecological relations." She orchestrates a vital perspective—one that questions not only who speaks, but the very systems that make life possible, or impossible.

Ultimately, her curatorial practice is grounded in an ecology of attention: a paradigm born of an expanded listening that relies on the wisdom of the elements.
