WORKSHOP: It’s time for our community to plan for the impacts of sea level rise. Join @caltransdistrict4 on Wednesday, September 30th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Willie Keyes Recreation Center.

WOEIP isn’t putting on this workshop, but we’re jazzed to see this conversation happening: climate change will have huge impacts on West Oakland, and this is a chance for community members to advocate for nature-based solutions like habitat restoration to protect our community from climate disasters.

Caltrans is doing a study on the area around the Bay Bridge touchdown in West Oakland and Emeryville, including Crescent Marsh and parts of the Bay Trail. They have lots of workshops on this study coming up, so if you can’t make it on Wednesday, you can still join the conversation.

How do you measure the value of a human life? What about a community?

Back in the 60s and 70s, Interstate 980 displaced thousands of people and divided a thriving Black neighborhood. Now, Caltrans is considering removing or capping part of the freeway–but if we’re going to break the cycle of development and displacement, we have to understand the original harm.

Caltrans and partners (including WOEIP and Randolph’s consulting firm @rbacreative ) just released their first report on potentially removing the freeway. But their study didn’t go far enough to calculate the true cost of the freeway–so the nonprofit @evoakcreativity started its own parallel, community-driven process.

EVOAK! is tracking health impacts, environmental damage, and the generational costs borne by displaced families. They spent two years interviewing dozens of legacy residents and people displaced by I-980’s construction. Now they’re combining research and oral histories to calculate the compounding and cumulative harm.
