POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Excited to kick off our next studio brief for the RCA MA Architecture programme today. This year we investigate ‘Phase Change’ in cities and their edgelands - searching for ‘Thin Places’ where futures (climatic/technological/ecological) feel closer.

Wrapping up a year of sensitive and urgent investigations with our @rca_ads13 students at @rca.architecture.

This is a Gaussian Splat 3D reconstruction of their contribution to the MA Architecture graduate show at RCA this year which closed this weekend.

ENTANGLED OCEAN: SHORELINE SIGNALS

Life on land is deeply entangled with the Ocean. Today, the shoreline simultaneously represents the threshold to the world’s only remaining wilderness and the looming threat of climate catastrophe.

This year, we investigated coastlines at tipping points. From contaminated estuaries, to eroding seaside towns, to societies threatened by tsunami, to maritime bordering practices; we looked for ‘listening posts’; places of heightened sensitivity to oceanic futures.

Set within these ‘listening posts’, our projects act as architectural scenarios - provocations for how we might adapt not only our spaces, but also our values and practices. Drawing on documentary fieldwork that we conducted with communities already on Ocean frontlines, our projects extrapolate critical fictions; pointing to radical shifts in how and why we build, warning of the dangers of maintaining the status quo, and returning us to more ancient ways of relating to unstable ground.

Our studio seeks the stories, values and ways of being that are needed to repair a scarred world. Acting as a space to rehearse our fears and desires, ADS13 imagines worlds that are not yet, but may yet be…

These architecture projects challenge how we see the world. Meet the architects and designers of the future as their newest work comes together at the MA Architecture Work in Progress Show 2026 in the Studio Building at RCA Battersea from 22 to 24 January...

...and take a peek behind the doors of the world's no 1 university for art and design!

The research and experiments from our students will reveal a profound engagement with the urgent ecological and material realities of our time.

You’ll find projects exploring the deep ocean (ADS13), the nature of the 'wild' (ADS9), and how we deal with pollution in our water and soil (ADS11). Students are looking at how we coexist with animals in industrial ruins (ADS3), how we survive in damaged worlds (ADS2) – and even how we face the end of things (ADS4).

This work also reimagines how we live and build. You’ll see ideas for new types of housing (ADS1) and better ways to use materials (ADS6). Some students mix architecture with performance (ADS0) or sport (ADS8), while others explore the unexpected through 'follies' (ADS5) or the concept of the journey (ADS7). From the economics of sharing (ADS10) to the sensory atmosphere of our homes (ADS12).

We are excited to be beginning our second academic year with @rca.architecture. This year, we turn our attention to signals from the Ocean, investigating the imminent future for coastal communities that are facing the consequences of shifting shores amid the climate crisis.
