O Canada 🇨🇦! Thanks to my lovely pal @zoecrosher who invited me to join her, I spent a beautiful ten days in Nova Scotia in August, visiting our dear friends (and fortunate dual citizens) Thea @theaboya and Sam @justsamanson and their son Dma, who jumped the LA ship during the pandemic. Inspired by the grand brick bones of the former customs house and post office in Annapolis Royal (the first settlement in Canada, with the forts to show for it), Thea and Sam bought the building and turned it into a cafe and bakery, ARCH&PO @archandpo , that is now the heart of the community. Most of our mornings started here with some of the best coffee I’ve ever had, and I’m not just saying that because Eden the barista created a portrait of Daisy in my flat white one day (thanks, Thea 🥹). Zoe and I stayed in the gorgeous apartment above the bakery, where my bedroom had views of the sea and the smell of baking bread and croissants wafted up in the wee hours. It’s almost true that we lived on pastries—all made under the loving gaze of “pastry saint” Dolly Parton (RIP)—but there was also fresh local seafood, peaches from the farmers market, tomatoes from Thea’s mom’s garden, and ARCH&PO’s incredible Middle Eastern spreads and pizza. I stayed on to do some writing after Zoe left, but there was still time for a dip in a swimming hole, a trip to Lake Joli, some live theater, a little thrifting, visits to the shops and studios of local artists like @rcyc_art , and a few blazing sunsets I will never forget (Zoe even made it to the golf course). It felt a little surreal to be an American in light of the recent madness, but I was grateful to be in a place where life is intergenerational, the air is cooled by the sea, and the kids are clearly alright (see Dma and his band the Parallels, at a show that brought out the whole town, “rocking in the free world” wearing cool t-shirts by auntie @elkpen ).Thank you Thea & Sam & fam, the amazing bakery crew, and the many kind Canadians I met along the way. I can’t wait to come back! 🥐❤️🥐
