and we’re back for a THIRD year! I LOVE BLACK HORROR READATHON IS BACK FOR FEBRUARY! 💌🖤

every year i’m taken aback by how many people participate and i’m grateful for what this readathon has done for my reading and creativity. it’s made me an absolute horror loving weirdo, but it also formed reading habits that have become a huge part of how i learn about the world ❤️ so i want to be sure to thank you all for participating every year, it means the world.

if you’re new here, the rules are simple: READ BLACK HORROR AUTHORS AND MAIN CHARACTERS ALL FEBRUARY ‼️

i made this readathon simple on purpose to make it clear how easy it can be to start reading more diversely in the genre and also so no one gets overwhelmed! the whole goal is to get people reading more diverse horror, destigmatize the stereotype that POC don’t read or write horror, and build a community! SO AGAIN, the ONLY RULE is to read Black horror all month!

a new element to the readathon is our monthly theme this year! all month we’ll be asking the question “what is horror?” between reading speculative fiction from different communities all year and writing critical articles for @nightterrormag i’ve found myself asking this question a lot. what makes a book or movie or show a part of the horror genre? being scared or disturbed is such a subjective emotion, how do we generalize it? especially if it’s regarding a topic that may not specifically horrify you?

we’ll be exploring this question through our reads and recommendations all month so i’ll be announcing NEW weekly themes soon! but until then, let’s get excited about this year’s collaborators! 🙌🏾

last year was my first year bringing Black creators i admire in the community into the readathon and it was amazing to uplift others on this platform! i can’t wait for yall to see their weekly recs for you all, but in the meantime check out @bookswith.janel @blerdy_girl_readings @nailahkingwrites and @theblerdlibrary on their socials ❤️ i’m such a huge fan of all of the work they do and i’d stand behind any recommendations they put out there! and i can’t thank them enough for taking part this year, yall are in for a treat!

here’s to another year!
